A lot of people tell us they've never tried taking the Sunbus because they weren't sure it would work for them.

Here's what might surprise you: every single Sunbus in Cairns is wheelchair accessible. Low-floor and ramp-equipped, right across the network.

The hardest part is rarely the bus itself. It's the first solo trip, the unfamiliar timetable, the "what if something goes wrong."

We spoke to a participant recently who'd been waiting three months for an OT appointment before accessing daily living support.

She didn't know she might not need to wait.

This comes up often, and it's worth saying clearly: many everyday supports funded under Assistance with Daily Life don't require an OT assessment before they can begin. Assessments are generally only needed when funding needs to be justified for things like assistive technology, home modifications, specialist disability accommodation, or other more complex supports.

For many participants, support can start as soon as they have the appropriate funding available in their plan.

Three months is a long time to go without help that's already funded.

It's someone ordering their own coffee for the first time. A morning routine that finally clicks. A participant who was nervous about catching the bus texting their support worker to say they did it solo.

These things can change someone's whole week. Sometimes their whole outlook.

People hear 'support coordination' and often picture someone who just checks in occasionally.

In practice, it's a lot more than that.

A support coordinator helps you:

✅ Understand what your plan actually says and what you can use it for
✅ Find and connect with the right providers for your needs
✅ Sort out issues when things aren't working
✅ Prepare for plan reviews so your funding reflects your real life
✅ Navigate the parts of the system that feel confusing or unfair

They're not there to make decisions for you. They're there to make sure you have the information and support to make decisions yourself.

When did you last have a full day to yourself?

For families and carers supporting someone with a disability, that question can feel almost impossible to answer.

Short Term Accommodation (sometimes called respite) is an NDIS support that allows a participant to stay somewhere suitable for a short period, with the right support in place.

For participants, it's a chance to try new experiences, build independence, and step into a little more of their own life.

For families and carers, it's a chance to actually rest. To breathe. To remember who you are outside of your caring role.

It can be funded under Core Supports, and it's one of those things that often goes unused simply because people don't realise it exists or assume it won't be approved.

We're always happy to chat through what might be possible for your family. 💚
