Thinking about a career in care but worried you are not qualified yet?

You do not always need a formal qualification to start. Many people begin while they study, as long as their screening checks and core safety training are in place. A caring nature matters just as much as a certificate.

At Just Better Care, every team member completes structured onboarding before their first visit, refreshes core skills each year, and has free access to more than 100 self-paced online courses. Training is what turns a caring nature into safe, confident, professional support.

The right support starts with the right team.

Participants tell us the thing that matters most is consistency: Support Workers who know your routine, your preferences and your goals, and who turn up reliably week to week.

Matching a team is a process, not a one-off decision. Your local Just Better Care office takes the time to understand your needs, your preferences and how you like to communicate before matching you with qualified, compassionate Support Workers. In our 2025 customer survey, 93 per cent of customers said they were happy with their matched Support Worker.

This is the first of four articles running throughout each week of September to mark 2026 Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. Part 1 seeks to understand dementia; it's an umbrella term for 100+ conditions, not a single disease, and it's Australia's leading cause of death. There are approximately 446,500 Australians currently living with dementia.

Read more:

This September, we're publishing a four-part series on dementia. Part 1 covers the basics: what dementia is, who it affects, and why the silence needs to end.

An hour of care is not an hour of wages.

When a price for in-home care looks higher than you expected, it helps to know what actually sits behind it: the worker in front of you, the travel time they are paid for, the clinical oversight of your plan, and the systems that keep it all safe and compliant.

A large new study of almost a million couples has found that spouses of people with dementia face a higher risk of developing it themselves. The researchers were clear that a higher risk is not the same as a certainty, and there are practical steps that help.

For carers, that means looking after your own health too: prioritising sleep, staying socially connected, managing cardiovascular health such as blood pressure, and accessing respite care regularly rather than waiting until burnout sets in.

New JAMA research reveals spouses of people with dementia face a higher risk themselves. Learn what factors help protect carers and where to find support.
