At Wuchopperen, children and young people have the right to feel safe, respected and heard.

We are committed to being a Child Safe Organisation. This means creating safe and welcoming spaces where children, young people, families and carers can speak up, ask for support and know they will be listened to.

If something does not feel right, children and young people can talk to a Wuchopperen staff member they trust, or ask a parent, carer, family member or support person to help them speak up.

We will listen, support and respond with care.

Your voice matters.

Meet Maddy, our Exercise Physiologist at Wuchopperen

Maddy has been part of the Wuchopperen team since August last year, bringing her skills, warmth, and passion for movement to support our clients’ health and wellbeing.

As an Exercise Physiologist, Maddy works alongside clients to help manage chronic conditions, recover from injury, address pain, or gain guidance to exercise safely. She can provide support for people living with:

Living with heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure or carrying extra weight

Recovering after surgery, an injury or time away from exercise

Managing ongoing pain, arthritis, sore joints or back pain

Living with breathing problems, balance concerns or changes to movement and strength

Wanting to stay strong, steady, mobile and independent as they get older

At Wuchopperen, Maddy runs group exercise classes from Monday to Thursday, with around 6 to 10 participants in each one-hour session. Each client receives a personalised exercise plan, allowing them to move in a way that suits their body, health needs, and goals.

These classes are about more than fitness. They help build strength, confidence, balance, mobility, and connection, while supporting clients to take active steps toward better health.

At Wuchopperen, we know that good health looks different for everyone. Through our Allied Health services, staff like Maddy support whole-of-person care that strengthens bodies, builds confidence, and keeps our community moving.

There is a current diphtheria alert in our region.

Diphtheria can be serious, but there are simple steps we can take to help protect ourselves, our families, Elders and community.

Prevent | Wash your hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, and keep cuts, skin sores and wounds clean and covered.

Protect | Vaccination is the best protection. If your diphtheria booster was more than 10 years ago, or you are unsure, book an appointment with Wuchopperen.

Prompt Care | Diphtheria can show up as skin sores, rash, ulcers that are not healing, sore throat, fever, trouble swallowing or trouble breathing.

If someone in your family, household or close community has had diphtheria, please contact Wuchopperen and come in for a check-up.

Today, our Connected Beginnings team is presenting at the Early Years Conference.

Keith Elaisa, Project Coordinator, Cat Uta, Project Officer, and Jaeleen Geary, Community Engagement Officer, are representing Connected Beginnings and sharing their presentation on: “Connecting early education, health and family support systems through culturally led governance.”

The conference brings together people working across early childhood education, health, child protection, family support and community services to strengthen outcomes for children and families from birth to 8 years.

We are proud to see Connected Beginnings sharing this important work and highlighting the strength of culturally led governance, collaboration and community-controlled approaches.

This week, we proudly recognise on World Family Doctor Day, acknowledge and celebrate the incredible GPs who care for our community every day.

This year’s theme, “Compassionate Care in a Digital World,” reminds us that while healthcare continues to evolve - kindness, understanding and connection remain at the heart of great care.

At Wuchopperen, we are deeply grateful for the dedication, compassion and commitment our doctors show to our clients and families across every stage of life. We especially acknowledge Dr Matthew O'Bryan, Dr Phoebe Williams and Dr James Anstey - three of the many caring doctors at Wuchopperen Health Service supporting the health and wellbeing of our community.

Thank you to all of our GPs and healthcare teams for walking alongside our community, listening with care, and helping our people stay strong and healthy.

If you or your family need support, our health services are here for you. To learn more or book an appointment, contact Wuchopperen today.

On 12 May, our Cairns community came together at Wuchopperen Health Service to stand together and united against domestic and family violence. It was a deadly afternoon filled with connection, conversation, and community spirit.

With music from Danny Bani, the wonderful Charmaine Doolan aka Dizzy Doolan as MC, face painting, jumping castle, lucky door prizes, and yarns shared throughout the day, the event created a safe space to raise awareness and strengthen support within our community.

While the event may be over, the conversation does not stop here. Together, we continue to stand strong, support one another, and work towards safer families and communities.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and to the organisations who supported the event: North Queensland Women’s Legal Service, Australian Nurse-Family Partnership Program, Wuchopperen Social and Emotional Wellbeing Team, Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters, Clontarf Foundation, Jalbu Integrated Women's Health Hub, Sisterhood – Healing – Empowerment- Learning-Leadership-Sharing program, Mission Australia, Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service, Remote Area Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation, Relationships Australia, Community Corrections, Police Indigenous Liaison Officers, First Nations Woman’s Gathering LTD, Warringu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation, YETI - Youth Empowered Towards Independence, and Deadly Choices.
