A day in the life of Natalie lately:

💫Early morning starts.
💫Driving between appointments listening to podcasts between home visits.
💫Arriving early to appointment to finish off notes from previous client where I can.
💫Home time. More admin, then activating mum-mode whilst trying to sneak in some movement most day wherever I can.

Some days this work feels heavy.
Some days incredibly rewarding.
Usually both at once.

But I still genuinely feel grateful to do work that matters to people’s everyday lives.

A lot of people have spent years believing they are “failing” at food.

When often the issue was:

• unrealistic expectations
• all-or-nothing thinking
• shame
• chronic dieting
• burnout
• life stress
• trying to follow plans that never suited them

People tend to make more sustainable changes when they feel supported instead of criticised.

A reminder for carers (or anyone really):

You are allowed to use convenience foods.

🍽 Pre-cut fruit.
🍽 Rotisserie chicken.
🍽 Frozen vegetables.
🍽 Ready meals.
🍽 Protein yoghurt.
🍽 Meal delivery services.

Support systems exist for a reason.

You do not need to prove your worth through exhaustion.

There are days when cooking a nutritious meal from scratch is realistic.

And there are days where:

• cereal counts
• toast counts
• frozen meals count
• takeaway
• supermarket shortcuts count
• a smoothie counts

Nutrition does not disappear because life got hard.

I think people underestimate how important flexibility is for long-term wellbeing.

Food does not need to be perfect to be helpful.

One thing working in healthcare constantly reminds me:

You never really know what someone is carrying.

People are navigating:
• illness
• caring roles
• grief
• exhaustion
• financial pressure
• disability
• relationship stress

I think that’s why compassion matters so much in healthcare conversations.

I’m much less interested in whether someone is eating perfectly…

…and much more interested in:

• whether they are nourished
• whether food feels stressful
• whether eating is sustainable
• whether they have enough energy
• whether meals fit their actual life

Health is usually more nuanced than social media allows for.

One of the hardest parts of caring can be food.

Especially when the person you support:

• has low appetite
• refuses meals
• has dementia
• loses weight
• has sensory issues
• becomes distressed around eating
• has swallowing difficulties

Meals can become emotionally loaded very quickly.

Sometimes families need support just as much as the person receiving care.

One thing I wish more people understood:

Loss of appetite is not always “just picky eating”.

It can be linked to:
• medication side effects
• fatigue
• pain
• neurodivergence
• swallowing difficulties
• anxiety
• sensory sensitivities
• dementia
• chronic illness
• disability

Sometimes eating is genuinely hard work.

People often feel judged for struggling with food, when what they actually need is support, curiosity and practical strategies.

A lot of my work happens in ordinary places.

*Client's kitchen tables or lounge chairs.
*Sweating profusely in my home office in Cairns.
*Cars between home visits.
*Phone/video calls.
*Beach esplanade.
*Library or cafe.

Nutrition care rarely looks as polished as Instagram.

Most of it is humans trying their best in complicated situations.

Another reduction in NDIS dietitian pricing.

This week's further reduction in NDIS dietitian pricing, on top of last year's cuts, is another difficult change for both dietitians and NDIS participants.

At a time when the rising cost of doing business is already placing significant pressure on disability dietitians, these continued pricing reductions risk making NDIS service delivery increasingly unsustainable.

Without nutrition, nothing matters.

Nutrition is fundamental to function, achieving participants' goals, independence, health, and quality of life.

Reducing access to Accredited Practising Dietitians may reduce costs today, but it risks increasing healthcare costs tomorrow through preventable nutrition-related complications, poorer health outcomes, and avoidable hospital admissions.

The greatest impact won't be on dietitians. It will be on people living with disability, who deserve timely access to high-quality nutrition care.
Nutrition is not an optional extra. It is essential healthcare. Let's advocate for dietitian so NDIS participants continue to have access to the dietetic care they deserve.

Without nutrition, nothing matters.
