Because looking after our team is just as important as looking after everyone else 💛 A day full of laughs, thrills and fun outside the clinic!

“Is my child ready for Prep?”

If you have asked yourself that in the last fortnight, you are in very good company. Term 4 is two weeks old and this is the question doing laps of every carpark on the Coast.

So here is the calmer way we think about it, and it is almost never the thing parents expect. 🙏🏼

Readiness is not the alphabet. It is not counting to twenty, and it is not writing their name neatly. Those things are lovely, and they are also the easiest things to teach once a child is there.

What we actually look at is four quieter things.

💛 Big feelings across a long day. Not staying calm. Nobody stays calm. Can they come back from a disappointment and have another go, with a grown up nearby?

💚Being understood when the room is noisy. Following two instructions at home is one skill. Following them with twenty four other kids in the room is a completely different one.

💙 Having another go. A child who will stay with something tricky for one more try is readier than a child who performs beautifully until the first wobble.

🩷 Joining the play, and staying in it. Getting in is one thing. Staying in when somebody changes the rules is the skill the playground actually runs on.

A child can know every letter and still find those four hard. A child can know no letters at all and be beautifully ready.

And here is the part we most want you to hear. All four of those grow. They are skills, not a verdict. Readiness is not a pass or a fail, and your child is not sitting an exam you forgot to study for. 💙

If you are weighing it up, including the “one more year of kindy” question, Term 4 is exactly the right time to be thinking about it, and you do not have to think about it on your own. No referral needed for a chat.

Three years of Sarah!

Sarah is one of our allied health assistants, which means she is very often the person a child is actually looking for when they walk through the door. 🧡

She joined us in October 2023 and three years is long enough that it is hard to remember the shape of the place without her in it.

Here is what three years of Sarah has looked like 🥹

She works across both clinics, and she works out in the world too. Schools, kindies, lounge room floors. She takes the plan our speech pathologists and OTs have built and carries it into the places a child actually lives their life which is where so much progress happens! 🌟

She builds relationships that last. Not only with the child, with the whole family. She is the one who remembers what happened at the swimming carnival, who asks about the new puppy, who knows which week is going to be a hard one. 🍃

Some children take a long time to let a new person in. They have their reasons, and they are good ones. Those are the children Sarah quietly leans towards.

Sarah does not push and she never gives up. She finds the one thing that child loves, and then she builds on it. And builds on it, week after week, until one day the child is not getting through the session, they are looking forward to it. 👏

That is not a small thing. Trust is what every bit of therapy sits on top of, and Sarah is extraordinary at building it.

Three years of showing up for families on the Coast, in clinic rooms and classrooms and living rooms. Three years of being the person a child decides is safe.

Happy Zoe-versary Sarah. We are so grateful to do life with you. 💙

"We love Friday's!" Friday's like this make our hearts happy. It's why we do what we do, and it's how we do it - it looks like he is just building a tower, but here is what is actually happening in that tower.

- Asking for every brick 🗣
- Keeping the bricks slightly out of reach - a child who can reach everything need not ask for anything, instead having to find the words, the gesture, the attempt.
- Commenting on how high, how many, exclaiming about when will it fall!
- Giving directions and instructions - teaching Hannah - where they go - on top, underneath, before, after.. Those little position words are quietly some of the hardest work in the room, and they are everywhere in a maths lesson three years from now. ✨

Not to mention, fixing it when we get it wrong or it falls and communicating how we feel about that, how we might respond. Repairing a misunderstanding and staying in the game are real skills, and the world will ask him for it constantly, regulation is the ground everything else is built on. 💙

The good thing for Fridays - none of that looks like work. That is exactly why it goes in so well. A child who is enjoying himself will try a harder word than a child who is being drilled, every. single. time. 🌟

The other thing in this photo, and honestly the most important one: this little man loves Friday mornings. He is not enduring them! When a child trusts the person, they will have a go at the thing that is hard for them, and that willingness is worth more than any activity we could choose. 🥹

Thank you to the family who let us share this and for celebrating Hannah! It made our week. 🧡

At Zoe we do this on the daily! 🙌🏼

Our speech pathologists, OTs, psychologists and allied health assistants work side by side every day. So when an OT finds a seating position that helps a little one settle into play, she can pop next door and share it before the speechie’s session that afternoon. When a psychologist has a calming strategy that’s working, the whole team can use it too. 🎉

No waiting weeks for a meeting or dealing with schedule line ups, just a quick chat in person or over a chat, then and there, your supports immediately more informed, your service richer and better outcomes for all. 💪

This is what interdisciplinary care looks like for us: speech, OT and psychology working together, not in silos. Small moments that add up to your child being known by a whole team. ✨

Please join us in celebrating Chiara today! Happy birthday to our queen of voice therapy. 🎂

If you have not yet had the opportunity to meet Chiara, she is one of those lovely people who is kind and encouraging and always puts her clients first.

Voice work is a quieter corner of speech pathology and many of us do not know it exists, so here is the short version: it is for anyone whose voice is hoarse or tired or strained, the teacher who loses it by the end of a school day, or the singer who pushes so hard to be heard that their voice pays for it. Chiara is your go-to!

Chiara is also very brave. She is a singer herself, and she has been developing in new genres this year, pushing herself to be better even in her hobbies. Cheering you on Chiara! 👏

Happy birthday Chiara - We hope the day is full of sunshine and beach, we know the year ahead is a good one! 🧡

These holidays both our clinics were run by spies! 🕵️

Spy Kids was our school holiday program for 5 to 12 year olds, and like most good therapy it looked almost entirely like a very large game! 🎉

Here is what the mission actually involved…

Searching and finding hidden letters, which is visual scanning and early literacy wearing a disguise.

Whole body missions and obstacle courses, which is gross motor, planning a sequence of movements, and the confidence that comes from getting through something physical.

Fiddly tools, small equipment, tiny clues, which is fine motor and the hand strength that later shows up in handwriting.

Spot what has changed, which is visual perception, and the same skill a child uses to tell a ch from a th.

Things to touch that they might not have chosen, which is tactile exploration at a pace the child sets.

New foods to investigate, because a good spy tastes the evidence. Trying something unfamiliar is a great deal easier when it is part of a story and nobody is watching to see whether you like it.

But the thing we will remember is not on that list. 🥹

It is how much perseverance we watched. Children searching on when the clue was not where they expected it to be. Children holding one piece of information in their head while they went to find the next one. Children remembering a spy-rule from the day before and telling us before we could tell them. 👏🏻

That is working memory, sustained attention, language and motor planning, all of it at once, happening in kids who were fairly sure they were just solving a case.
Our OTs are going to take you properly into the thinking behind each activity, because there is a lot of it. For now, this is the highlight reel. 🕵️

Thank you to every family who trusted us with their kids these holidays, and to our OTs, speechies and allied health assistants, who built a whole world and then ran around inside it.

Both clinics are open all this week, and we are closed Monday 5 October for the King’s Birthday. Term 4 starts Tuesday 6 October.
