Uni gave me the theory.
My clients gave me perspective.

They taught me that progress is often quiet.
That play can hold so much learning.
That people usually aren’t struggling “for no reason”.
And that feeling safe and understood can change everything.

The longer I do this job, the less I care about perfect behaviour, perfect sessions, or perfect outcomes.

And the more I care about connection, flexibility, regulation, and helping people feel genuinely supported 💖

I think a lot about how quickly we label kids as “distracted” or “unfocused” without stopping to ask whether the environment actually supports attention in the first place.

Because attention isn’t just about trying harder 👀

It’s affected by sensory input, regulation, movement needs, stress, sleep, connection, predictability, and whether your nervous system feels safe enough to engage.

A lot of kids are doing the best they can in environments that are genuinely overwhelming for them.

And honestly? Most adults would struggle too.

Friendly reminder that accommodations are not “cheats” or “shortcuts”. 👀

Most people perform better when their environment actually supports them.

That’s not laziness.
That’s literally how humans work.

A nervous system that feels safer and more supported usually has more capacity for things like concentration, communication, problem solving, and emotional regulation.

We all have different needs. Workplaces that understand that tend to work better for everybody. ✨

National Reconciliation Week is a time to reflect, listen, learn, and continue conversations that matter.

Reconciliation is not a one-off event or a checkbox. It’s ongoing work that involves truth-telling, respect, relationship-building, and creating safer, more equitable spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As healthcare professionals, educators, organisations, and community members, there is always more we can learn about the impact of history, the importance of culture and connection, and the role we each play in meaningful reconciliation.

This week is also a reminder to continue seeking out and listening to First Nations voices, perspectives, and leadership - not just during National Reconciliation Week, but all year round.

POV I’m being asked about why I love showing off our cool sensory tools in the clinic 😅

Because honestly, half the fun of my job is getting professionally excited about things that look kinda silly but actually help so much 😂
