Spring into action, Sunshine Coast! ๐ŸŒด๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

With our beautiful Sunshine Coast weather, spring is the perfect time to get outdoors, hit the walking tracks or enjoy a swim! ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

But before you get moving, have you thought about how to fuel your body?

A dietitianโ€™s tip: Carbohydrates are your bodyโ€™s go-to fuel during exercise! Try a banana, toast, or fruit and yoghurt before your workout. If youโ€™re exercising for longer, a balanced meal a few hours beforehand can help keep your energy levels up.

๐Ÿ’ง And with the Queensland sun warming up, donโ€™t forget your water bottle!

Remember, everyoneโ€™s nutrition needs are different. The best pre-exercise snack depends on your activity, timing and what feels comfortable for you.

๐ŸŒž Need help finding the right fuel for your lifestyle? The team at Access Allied Health is here to help you make nutrition work for you!

Turns out, โ€œmore vegetablesโ€ isnโ€™t a once-a-week challenge!

๐ŸŒฝ Aim to include a variety of vegetables each day โ€” fresh, frozen, or canned all count. They provide fibre, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that support overall health.

Tip: Keep it simple. Add a handful of spinach to breakfast, some crunchy veggies to lunch, and make half your dinner plate vegetables.

Small changes, repeated every day, can make a big difference. ๐Ÿ’š

Rather than simply saying โ€œeat more vegetablesโ€, letโ€™s make it practical! For most adults, aim for around 5-6 serves of vegetables each day.

Remember, variety matters! Different coloured vegetables provide different nutrients including fibre, which is great for feeding your gut microbiome!

Why does iron matter?
Iron helps our bodies make haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body. Without enough iron, the body may produce less haemoglobin, reducing the amount of oxygen that red blood cells can carry from the lungs to the bodyโ€™s tissues.

Who may be more at risk of low iron intake?
Some people have higher iron requirements or may find it more difficult to meet their needs, including menstruating women, pregnancy, young children and people following vegetarian or vegan diets.
Animal sources of iron
โ€ข Lean red meat, pork, lamb, kangaroo
โ€ข Chicken
โ€ข Fish, salmon and seafood
โ€ข Eggs
Plant sources of iron
โ€ข Lentils and beans
โ€ข Chickpeas
โ€ข Tahini
โ€ข Tofu
โ€ข Iron-fortified breads and cereals
โ€ข Nuts and seeds
โ€ข Dark leafy green vegetables

A simple absorption tip:
Vitamin C can help the body absorb the type of iron found in plant foods! Try pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C-rich foods such as capsicum, broccoli, berries, oranges, kiwifruit or tomatoes.
Nutrition tip: Variety matters! Including a range of iron-rich foods across the week can help contribute to overall nutritional adequacy.

Friendly reminder: This post provides general nutrition information only and does not replace individualised nutrition advice from an Accredited Practising Dietitian. If you have concerns about your iron intake or nutritional needs, speak with an Accredited Practising Dietitian or your healthcare professional.

Know More Than Just Your Weight

Did you know that the number on the scales doesn't tell the whole story?

At Access Allied Health, we offer Body Composition Testing in all our clinics across the Sunshine Coast and Gympie. This quick, non-invasive assessment measures your body's water, body fat, and lean muscle mass, giving you a much clearer picture of your overall health than weight or BMI alone.

Because BMI and body weight can't distinguish between fat and muscle, body composition testing provides valuable insights that help our Dietitians tailor nutrition advice to your individual needs and track your progress over time.

Whether your goal is to improve your health, lose body fat, build muscle, or monitor your wellbeing, body composition testing is a great place to start.

๐Ÿ“ Available at all Access Allied Health clinics across the Sunshine Coast and Gympie. Book your appointment today and discover what's really happening beneath the surface!

Sip, Smile, Thrive! Why Every Drop Counts!

When it comes to staying healthy, hydration is one of the simplestโ€”and most powerfulโ€”things we can do. As dietitians, we like to think of water as the body's "unsung hero." It keeps everything running smoothly, from supporting digestion and circulation to helping regulate body temperature and keeping joints moving comfortably.

For older adults, staying hydrated is especially important. As we age, our sense of thirst naturally decreases, making it easier to become dehydrated without even noticing. Even mild dehydration can contribute to tiredness, headaches, constipation, dizziness, confusion, and an increased risk of falls.

The good news? Every sip counts! Water is the best choice, but milk, tea, coffee, soups, and foods with a high water contentโ€”like watermelon, oranges, cucumber, and jellyโ€”can all help boost daily fluid intake.
