Anything can be taken the wrong way. Especially in today’s society, where many people can be quick to take offence and turn something innocent into a reason to affirm a narrative they already hold—often reinforcing their own reasons for being offended and trapping themselves in a perpetual pattern of looking for offence.

And in some instances, using someone’s name to speak directly to them during a yoga class you’re teaching isn’t exempt from this.

However, that doesn’t mean we need to abandon a very useful tool.

In my experience, respectfully using names to address individual students in class has more value than not. If someone doesn’t like it, you’ll find out, and you can simply decide not to go there with certain people.

Being spoken to directly by name is very much appreciated by many students, and I don’t think we should be scared to take this approach as teachers.

Everyone can benefit from more functional adaptations of yoga asana…especially those who can easily force their body into ranges of flexibility.

Extraordinary physical skills are not automatically equal to better health. Let’s start making that clear for put students.

Drop a 💚 if you’d like to enhance your teaching skills and become a supportive teacher that empowers your students to practice yoga in a more functional, sustainable and accessible way, and focus less on performing ‘perfectly aligned’ poses that don’t work for most bodies.

I’m opening up spots for my 12-week mentorship program, where you’ll get personalised strategies, tailored feedback, and ongoing support - plus the accountability you need - to make big improvements in your teaching so you can hold space for all kinds of students who come to your classes.

Drop a 💚 if you‘re interested in learning more!

If better functionality for life off the mat is one of the things you want to teach your students, this video is for you!

When range is driven by external factors like the hips pushing forward in a low lunge WITHOUT the participation of the back leg kicking back, the joints become highly unsupported and this easily leads to joint instability over time.

However when range is driven by internal muscular activity driving the body into a position the joints become much more stable and the entire movement or pose itself becomes much more functional and sustainable.

Forcing the body into excessive range isn’t necessary to gain benefit.

The sole reason why this debate exists within the yoga world is because asana is not very focused on improving the functionality and biomechanics of the body.

The typical approach to asana is so fixated on using EXTERNAL force to create performative flexibility that it’s not a surprise at all that some people believe the glutes should be relaxed during a backward bend.

But all you need to do is look to the most innate movement patterns that exist in the body - walking and running - to know what to do with the glutes during spinal extension poses.

No one teaches you how to walk or run, it’s hardwired within your design and your physical body is created to facilitate this locomotive movement. And by natural design, back body activation and engagement creates reciprocal front body lengthening during times of spinal and hip extension.

If you want to focus on performative ways of teaching yoga poses with no care or concern as to how the body is affected long-term, go ahead and teach your students to relax the glutes.

But if you want to focus on more safe, sustainable, functional and accessible ways of doing yoga asana you’ll wanna start finding ways to help your students get in touch with the engagement and participation of the b***y.

I’m more invested in taking care of my students long-term health than I am in teaching yoga asana the ‘right’ way.

Because a lot of yoga asana creates dysfunctional flexibility & movement patterns in the body that aren’t designed for physical longevity.

Take this typical sun sal transition from standing into forward fold into downward dog. It’s usually encouraged to fold and then half lift with the legs straight-ish, as that is meant to help with hamstring flexibility (or so they say).

But honestly, what use is folding forward with the legs straight and the feet in a very particular position when it comes to the daily activities of life?

Now I know that there are many out there (I was once one of them) who would respond with something like ‘well I can tie my shoes better and pick things up off the ground’, and while that’s important and provides a purpose, the way it’s being done isn’t very supportive of the weight that the body has to carry when doing those things.

Just because someone CAN bend over with their legs straight-ish and tie their shoes or pick something up off the ground doesn’t mean it’s fostering the body’s natural mechanics or moving in accordance with its design.

And given the alarming amount of hamstring injuries that happen within a yoga practice I’d say it’s better to avoid any kind of pose or movement that strains and tugs on the hamstrings in an unsupported, dysfunctional position which is usually being forced with something like the hands or gravity.

That’s why I choose to teach this transition of chair —> lifting heels —> reaching hands forward—> landing on hands —> hopping to down dog, instead of the typical forward fold & half lift.

The only point I see in doing this transition with straight-ish legs is if someone wants to work on a straight legged entry into handstands because it’s fun for them. Otherwise, there’s really no worthwhile gain that can’t be achieved in some other safer, more sustainable way.

The block between the feet is an extra little point of awareness that can be helpful for core activation if the hop is something that your students want to work on.

Your yoga students SHOULD be thinking when they practice yoga. The way I see it…allowing them to just give their autonomy and discernment away and let you as the teacher decide for them is irresponsible.
