In many parts of the world, colon cancer is the biggest cause of cancer deaths in those under age 50. There is a bacteria called Fusobacterium nucleatum that is present in all colorectal tumours. This bacteria promotes cancer growth and causes resistance to chemotherapy. If you have any of this bacteria in your body, it's supposed to stay in your mouth. In people with colorectal cancer, the bacteria travels from the mouth, through the bloodstream and then makes its way to the colon. If you have bleeding gums or gum disease, the bacteria can enter your bloodstream more easily. Look after the health of your mouth. Infections or inflammation here can have harmful consequences in other parts of your body.
