Japan’s compassion shines brightest when it’s needed most!
The country is testing solar-heated benches and bus stop shelters that absorb warmth during the day and release it overnight — offering comfort to those who sleep outdoors. Using phase-change materials, these units store solar heat and slowly release it for up to 12 hours, requiring no fuel or electricity.
Pilot programs in Tokyo and Sapporo aim to reduce cold-related emergencies by transforming existing public furniture in busy areas into sources of warmth. If the trials succeed, cities could gain a low-cost, sustainable way to make public spaces safer and more humane after dark.
