ON COHERENCE
A leaf only makes sense in relationship to the forest.
Sometimes it feels as though we've become so focused on understanding the parts that we've forgotten the whole.
It's a little like trying to understand a forest by only studying a leaf.
The leaf matters.
But the leaf only makes sense in relationship to the tree, the soil, the fungi, the insects, the weather, and the wider ecosystem that supports it.
People are much the same.
Our thoughts, emotions, nervous systems, bodies, relationships, histories, and environments do not exist in isolation. They are part of a living system.
Yet many of us have been taught to focus only on the parts.
A symptom.
A diagnosis.
A behaviour.
A body part.
For those living with trauma, chronic stress, anxiety, or disconnection, this can sometimes leave us feeling even more fragmented.
As a Yoga Therapist and Somatic Practitioner, my work is grounded in the philosophy of coherence — the understanding that healing emerges through relationship.
Relationship with the body.
Relationship with ourselves.
Relationship with others.
Relationship with the living world around us.
This is also the foundation of salutogenesis: exploring what supports health, meaning, connection, and wellbeing, rather than focusing solely on what is wrong.
If you're tired of focusing on the parts and ready to reconnect with the whole, perhaps the invitation isn't to fix yourself.
Perhaps it's to come home to yourself.
To move from fragmentation to coherence.
From disconnection to relationship.
From fixing to healing.
