Pegasus Riding for the Disabled of the ACT

Pegasus brings people of all abilities together with inclusive programs, care and community. Why horseriding?

Pegasus is an iconic Canberra charity which exists to empower people to develop their abilities. Established in 1973, Pegasus is located at Pegasus Farm on the outskirts of Canberra, the national capital. Around 80 people each week with a disability participate in our horse-facilitated therapy programs. Pegasus would not survive without the support it receives from the community and more than 250

volunteers. Our sessions are offered in an integrated environment with participants placed according to their ability. Apart from being fun, horse riding helps to improve co-ordination, balance, muscle development and fitness. It also boosts confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, leadership and trust.

When we speak up together, we help safeguard inclusion, access, and opportunity for participants and families across Canberra, now and into the future.

A very special afternoon at Pegasus 💙🐴
This week our Board Chair Sarah Queenan joined the Pegasus community in welcoming Senator Katy Gallagher. Sarah also shared how vital genuine collaboration and strong partnerships with government are to ensuring vulnerable people in our communities continue to receive the support they need. By working together listening to lived experience, planning for long-term impact, and investing in services that build inclusion and wellbeing we can protect what’s working, respond faster when needs change, and make sure no one is left behind. She also appreciated the opportunity to brief the Senator on the impacts the Drake Brockman Drive project will have on our facility, and the importance of protecting Pegasus’ ability to continue supporting the Canberra community for generations to come.

A very special afternoon at Pegasus 💙🐴

Yesterday we were delighted to welcome Senator Katy Gallagher Katy Gallagher to Pegasus.

Thank you to Senator Gallagher for being so generous with her time, meeting our wonderful participants, families, volunteers and leadership team, and seeing Pegasus in action.
We also appreciated the opportunity to brief her on the impacts the Drake Brockman Drive project will have on our facility and the importance of protecting Pegasus’ ability to continue supporting the Canberra community for generations to come.

🐴 ❤️ A very special afternoon at Pegasus today!

The Pegasus leadership team was delighted to welcome Minister Chris Steel, Minister Suzanne Orr, Yvette Berry MLA and their teams to Pegasus this afternoon.

It was a wonderful opportunity to tour our facilities and see a Pegasus program in action, alongside our incredible participants, volunteers, coaches and, of course, our horses.
Importantly, we were also able to show firsthand the potential impact of the planned duplication of Drake-Brockman Drive on our outdoor arena and facilities, and discuss why finding a solution is so important to the future of Pegasus and the community we serve.

From Pegasus Archive, Jane Donnelly Story

Jane’s story is one of those “Pegasus-shaped” beginnings that quietly set the direction of a whole life.

Back then, she was a horse-crazy teenager with no clear plan beyond wanting to be around horses—and wanting to be useful. She’d ride at Forest Park and, in what might be the most perfect proof of commitment, she’d catch three buses each way just to get to Pegasus: one to Civic, Civic to Belconnen, then Belconnen out to Drake Brockman Drive. Not because anyone asked her to. Because she wanted to be there. She started where so many volunteers do doing whatever needed doing looking after the horses, sidewalking, leading, learning the rhythms of the place and the quiet teamwork that makes sessions possible. Somewhere in that first year, she gained something that stayed with her: a deep respect for volunteers and the way they hold an organisation up, day after day, without fuss.

As she grew into the role, Pegasus grew into her too. She wasn’t just helping anymore she was becoming someone others relied on. Before long she was supervising the high school students who came in to volunteer, and the scene still makes her laugh: teenagers trailing behind her, calling her “Mum,” peppering her with questions about what they could do next, eager to be part of it all. It’s such a Jane detail—steady, capable, warm, someone who made others feel safe enough to learn. And then came the moment that turned volunteering into a new chapter: she was offered a paid working pupil position, funded through the Government Community Employment Program. It wasn’t just a job; it was recognition, and an opportunity to build real skills.

Those working pupil days are where the memories sharpen into something almost cinematic. Jane received riding tuition from the wonderful Bid Williams—an experience she still holds with genuine gratitude. For a time she even kept her horse, Hawa, on site (a treasured photo from Tanya capturing that era). She remembers riding with Kiri Davidson on the beautiful Thunder, and the thrill of trotting sometimes even cantering, up the hill. Not just the joy of riding, but the feeling of belonging: horses, people, purpose, and the sense that Pegasus wasn’t simply a place she volunteered at. It was a place that helped shape who she became.

And like so many Pegasus stories, it didn’t end when she left. Eventually Jane moved to Sydney, but Pegasus travelled with her in the form of values and skills that never really switch off. She is still involved with RDA, as a coach and a long-time volunteer continuing the cycle she once stepped into as a teenager catching buses before dawn, determined to be useful. Looking back, her story isn’t only about “then.”

It’s about the way Pegasus can spark something lasting: a path, a calling, and a lifetime connection to the power of horses and community.
