Since 2015, the AIDA Awards have celebrated the incredible contributions of our members to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

This is your chance to recognise an outstanding AIDA Member across three categories:

“I actually had a baby in first year of medicine… and then I stuck around anyway and had another.”

Wonnarua woman Dr Leila Usher balanced medical training with raising a family while pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor.

Now an obstetrician-gynaecologist in Newcastle, she works to improve care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and families and strengthen culturally safe maternity services.

AIDA's First Nations Oncology Experience Program reached a key delivery milestone in June on Gadigal Country, with a Cultural Safety Workshop designed specifically for the field of Oncology.

AIDA and Cancer Australia are proud to collaborate with Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, Mater Hospital Brisbane, St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney , The Royal Adelaide Hospital and The Royal Darwin Hospital.

Over the coming year, these esteemed institutions will host Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students for clinical oncology placements, providing invaluable opportunities to explore pathways into oncology and cancer care.

By welcoming late-stage medical students, each partner is contributing to strengthening the pipeline of First Nations doctors entering the cancer workforce, and improving the delivery of culturally safe health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.

This month, we reached a powerful milestone for AIDA’s Cultural Safety Program, celebrating our 1000th participant, Joanne Garlick.

“The AIDA Cultural Safety Workshop is a must do for clinicians and managers to better understand the complexities of Aboriginal culture on health, wellbeing, service provision and community engagement," Joanne shares.

"Investment in improving knowledge and understanding is a starting point to facilitate change, and support next generations.”

Joanne’s words reflect what Cultural Safety is all about. It invites us to pause, listen deeply and reflect on how care is experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples within healthcare.
