I don’t know about you, but if I were going to take diabetes advice I would be more likely to take it from someone who is living with diabetes themselves. At the age of 10, my mum and I went to the doctor following me having a cold for a week. On the spot my doctor diagnosed me with type 1 diabetes and told us to go straight to the hospital. The only other things I remember her saying was that I was likely to have a limb amputated one day, that I could go blind and that it would be difficult for me to have children. My mum was the most affected by this diagnosis; all I heard and was terrified about was that you have to stay in hospital, I just wanted to go home! My mum threw herself into finding out everything she could about type 1 diabetes so that she could take the best care of me and teach me the right things. The doctor continued to be of no help, she didn’t offer any useful books to read and didn’t really offer any valuable information. I did meet a wonderful Endocrinologist at the time who helped us through this hard transition and a couple of fantastic nurses but the hospital stay was purely to learn how to do my own injections, this took one week; my doctor told me I could not leave the hospital until I was doing my own injections. Ever since I was a child I have tested my blood glucose levels independently and have done insulin injections first with needles and vials and then with insulin pens. I made the difficult decision to convert to an insulin pump in 2012 when I commenced work as a full time Registered Nurse and I have never looked back. In my life I have lanced my fingers 75,000+ times, I have injected my arms, legs and abdomen more than 30,000 times and I have changed my insulin infusion set more than 512 times. It is due to this doctor’s compassionless and apathetic treatment of me that I am thankful for her. Without her, I would not have been driven to make a diagnosis of diabetes a better experience for others. This doctor motivated me to become a Diabetes Educator; to be an empathetic Diabetes Educator who has sat in the same chair being diagnosed with diabetes, to be a Diabetes Educator who understands exactly what it feels like when you are told you have to inject yourself with insulin every day for the rest of your life, to be someone who could answer questions in a way people understood, to be somebody who could give you useful resources to help you understand in your own time and to understand that you may have questions at odd times of the day, to be a Diabetes Educator who understands that you think about everything in a day in relation to your diabetes and how it will be affected, a Diabetes Educator who understands that you think about many things in the future and how they will be affected by your diabetes. That is who I am today.

✈️🌴 Isabel is officially OUT OF RANGE! 🌴✈️

First Bali adventure with my two favourite travel buddies 💙. We’re swapping pumps, paperwork and appointments for pools, palm trees and a little bit of chaos for a few days! 😂

I’ll be back at work 12 October, but it’s business as usual for the rest of the InRange crew while I’m away.

💙 Bunny and Skyelar are working their normal hours, and Emma is keeping everything ticking along behind the scenes.

For appointment enquiries or new bookings, contact Emma at [email protected].

🌴☀️ Life’s better InRange… even when Isabel is temporarily out of range! 💙

Supremely hating life this weekend without my Smart friend! Just posting to show the sometimes reality of life with type 1 diabetes, especially over a weekend where i am single muming it and throwing a ten year old birthday party with 8 kids at the bike track and in the pool. Im alright with having less time InRange occasionally and yesterday was a day for protective behaviours and not focussing on myself entirely so it was bound to happen.

Just throwing some reality your way. Im not always above 90% InRange. Truthfully, my average even with smart gaurd is 89% InRange. But there are days like these in the mix, and that is ok!

Tell me your Time InRange highs or lows! Extra points for pics! 🌟⭐️

✈️ Travelling with a MiniMed 780G? A little SmartGuard time-zone piece of knowledge…

Changing time zones does not mean you should expect to lose SmartGuard for 48 hours every time you travel.

The 780G allows you to change the pump’s Time & Date to match your new local time zone. A normal timezone change should not, by itself, trigger a new 48-hour SmartGuard warm-up.

BUT… there’s an important difference between changing a few hours for travel and making a large correction to the pump’s calendar date.

I discovered this one the annoying way. 😂

My pump date was accidentally a month behind. When I corrected it, SmartGuard immediately became unavailable and the SmartGuard Checklist showed:

“SmartGuard warming up.”

Why?

SmartGuard relies on recent insulin-delivery history. A major jump in the calendar date can disrupt the chronology of that history, meaning the pump may need to gather enough insulin-delivery information again before SmartGuard can be used.

Medtronic distinguishes this from “SmartGuard updating,” which can take up to 5 hours.
“SmartGuard warming up” means the system is gathering insulin-delivery history and determining the basal rate — and this can involve the longer SmartGuard warm-up period.

So the practical takeaway:

✈️ Normal timezone change: Change the pump to the correct local time/date as recommended. You shouldn't routinely expect a 48-hour SmartGuard warm-up.

📅 Large date correction: This is different. A substantial jump in the pump's calendar date may result in SmartGuard needing to warm up again.

And definitely don't deliberately change the date backwards again to try to fix it — the pump's time and date should remain accurate.

One of those very specific pump lessons I would have preferred to learn from a manual rather than from my own pancreas. 😂

Life’s better InRange (AND in smart gaurd!). 💙

After 10 years, I'm officially ditching the C.

Not diabetes.
Not education.
Just the C in CDE. 😂

From here, you'll see NP DE after my name rather than NP CDE.

Why?

Because after a decade as a Credentialled Diabetes Educator, I've also completed my Masters and gained endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner — and I've reached the slightly awkward point where the two scopes don't fit neatly beside each other.

A CDE is a specialist in diabetes education and management, supporting people to understand their diabetes, make informed decisions and develop the skills and confidence to manage it.

That philosophy is still very much the foundation of how I practise.

But as a Nurse Practitioner, my scope now goes further.

I can assess and diagnose, order and interpret pathology and other investigations, prescribe and adjust medications, make referrals, and independently manage episodes of care — while still doing the diabetes education I've spent the last 10 years doing.

So I'm not becoming less of a diabetes educator.

I'm actually able to do more with the education I provide.

I don't want diabetes education separated from clinical decision-making. I want to be able to sit with someone, look at the whole picture, teach them what is happening and why, make the clinical changes we're discussing where appropriate, and follow those changes through.

So, after 10 years of proudly being a CDE, I'm letting the credential go.

The qualification, experience, knowledge and decade of diabetes education practice aren't disappearing with the letter C.

I'm still a Diabetes Educator.

I'm also a Nurse Practitioner.

And apparently I'm now at the stage of my career where I'm getting rid of letters after my name rather than collecting more of them. 😂

Still a Diabetes Educator.
Now with Nurse Practitioner scope.
One less letter after my name. 💙🩵

Goulburn — we'd really love your support 💙

We’re bringing InRange Diabetes to Goulburn, with our wonderful Nurse Practitioner & Credentialled Diabetes Educator, Bunny, starting locally on 22 September at Goulburn Health Therapy.

Opening a new clinic in a regional area is always a bit of a leap of faith. We genuinely want this one to stay — but to do that, we need local people with diabetes to use it.

So if you live with Type 1, Type 2 or gestational diabetes, need help with your insulin pump (medtronic or omnipod only), medications or just feel like your diabetes care could be better, please consider giving us a go.

And if you know someone in Goulburn living with diabetes, sharing this post would mean a lot to our little business. 💙

We’d love to become part of the Goulburn community! Comment if youve had a great Diabetes team and want one locally!!

Life’s better InRange.

Ever wondered what a Nurse Practitioner actually does in diabetes care? 💙

Think of us as filling some of the gaps between your usual diabetes appointments.

At InRange, our Nurse Practitioners are also Diabetes Educators, which means we can combine hands-on diabetes education with advanced clinical care — including prescribing medications, ordering pathology, reviewing results, adjusting treatment and helping you access diabetes technology.

And importantly, you don’t need a referral to see us.

We work alongside your GP, endocrinologist and other healthcare providers — not instead of them — with the aim of making good diabetes care more accessible, practical and connected.

Whether you need regular diabetes support, help troubleshooting technology, medication changes, pathology, or simply someone who has the time to look at the whole picture, that’s where we come in.
