CHN congratulates Alison Loom, Practice Nurse Coordinator and Clinical Architect at Directions Health Services for winning the Excellence in Clinical Practice Award at the ACT Nurses & Midwives Awards.

Alison Loom was the innovator, clinical leader and key driver behind Pathways Assistance to Treatment (PAT). Funded by CHN as the ACT's PHN, Directions' mobile health service PAT provides outstanding person-centred, evidence-informed healthcare to people experiencing homelessness, insecure housing, mental illness, substance dependence and other complex health needs. Over the past decade, Ms Loom has guided PAT from a single nurse carrying everything she needed, to a purpose-built mobile health clinic delivering weekly multidisciplinary care across 11 locations in the Canberra region.

Ms Loom has simultaneously cultivated a workplace culture where professional growth is encouraged and supported, helping strengthen the service’s future clinical capability. Her leadership has improved access to comprehensive primary healthcare for thousands of people who may otherwise have gone without the care and support they deserve.

CHN, along with her Lead GP colleagues was proud to nominate her for this well-deserved award, and we are very grateful for all her contributions to the ACT community.

Today we're celebrating the success of Directions' first Caring Dads group.

Caring Dads is a 17-week program for men who want to improve their relationships and parenting skills to stay connected with their kids. Participants may have used DV, or be at risk of using DV. They might be facing problems with relationship breakdown, drug or alcohol use, managing anger and conflict or coping with daily stress.

Real conversations. Straight talk. No judgement.

📍ACT Nurses & Midwives Excellence Awards

A huge congratulations to Directions Health's Ali Loom on winning the Excellence in Clinical Practice Award at the ACT Nurses and Midwives Excellence Awards! 🏆

There are some people whose impact can't be measured simply by what they do, but by the lives they change, the services they build, and the people they inspire along the way. Nurse Practitioner Ali is one of those people.

What started as a single nurse carrying a backpack 10 years ago has, through her vision, determination and unwavering commitment to equitable healthcare, become the Chat to PAT service we know today. 🚚

Under her leadership, and the commitment of her Directions colleagues, PAT has grown into an innovative, mobile outreach model delivering compassionate, evidence-based care to some of Canberra's most vulnerable community members across the region.

What has always stood out is Ali’s ability to combine exceptional clinical expertise with genuine humanity. Whether she's supporting a person experiencing homelessness, mentoring a colleague, advocating to executives, or building partnerships across sectors, she does it with authenticity, compassion and respect.

She has not only transformed access to healthcare for thousands of Canberrans but has also created a culture of learning, wellbeing and excellence that empowers others to grow and succeed. 👩‍⚕️

This award, nominated by both her Lead GP colleagues and Capital Health Network, is so richly deserved and recognises years of dedication, leadership and tireless advocacy for those who need it most.

From Monday 12th October we're kicking off the annual Australian NSP Survey (also called the "finger prick survey"). It's an annual national monitoring survey coordinated by the at in Sydney.

The finger prick survey has been running for over 30 years, and provides important data for monitoring HIV, hepatitis C and sexual and drug use behaviours among people who inject drugs. It's one of the longest running surveys of its kind internationally 🧡 The data collected in the annual finger prick survey informs drug and health policy and practice in Australia and globally - and you can help 🫶

If you're an injecting drug user, you're eligible to participate - it's quick and easy, and you'll receive a $20 Coles voucher and a sweet treat to say thanks for your time - just chat with the friendly staff at NSP Civic (📸: Sirpa, AOD Support Worker)
