If you’re a doula, midwife, psychologist, counsellor or social worker, you have very likely heard of the term ‘Matrescence’. I am so excited about the emergence of this term and for where it will lead us in supporting women through the transition from maiden to mother, that I’ve now enrolled in my dear friend Anna Siebert from Soma Women’s Wellbeing ‘s Matrescence Practitioner Certification.
It teaches her Cyclic Return Method, which shows you how to read where a woman is at, and how to support her back into wellness. Anna spent ten years as a doula and has been a trauma therapist since 2018, so you also get digestible neuroscience along with skill development, a map, and a really clear line on scope and referral.
It’s six months on Zoom from 23 November, and every session is recorded. The pilot price is $1,200 until 30 October, then it goes to $2,000. If you’re interested, you can email [email protected] for the prospectus.
Can’t wait to add it to my tool kit!! Super excited too to be learning alongside these incredible women Kylie Coad Holly & Sage Portrait Art & Birth Doula and kathrynrm_ 👯‍♀️

Yesterday I had the pleasure of cooking nepali rice pudding, pumpkin and coconut stew and spinach, pumpkin and pepita stew with quinoa for a lovely second time mama as she prepares for a home birth this time around.

We connected on so many levels. Both of us had been at dragon dreaming festival 2 weeks ago without knowing it, we are both huge nature lovers and I gave her a wellness consult with my oils to support her in her parenthood journey 💧

As always I absolutely love the level of support I can give while cooking in someone’s home. It infuses an extra layer of love and healing into the delicious, deeply nourishing meals that the client feels with every spoonful as they recover from birth ✨

Wearing my new merch from my favourite plasterer miss Dee Deanna Billerwell today. Got to say I’m her biggest fan - ever since she was a tiny womb peanut she’s inspired me to be the best version of myself. I’m so proud to wear this and share what an excellent work ethic she has! She’s now connected with a pathways program for young women looking to get into trades and has a 16 year old under wing. Check out her work on her insta page if you’re looking for a reliable plaster with exemplary attention to detail 👷☑️🧰

Humans are what scientists call cooperative breeders, meaning we evolved to share the work of raising children across a whole community rather than pile it onto one or two people.

That's the argument USC psychologist Darby Saxbe made on the Modern Wisdom podcast, pushing back on the idea that postpartum depression has some built-in evolutionary purpose. She thinks it's closer to a mismatch between how we're wired and how we live.

For most of human history, new mothers had constant hands-on help. In some communities, a baby is held almost nonstop and passed among as many as 10 caregivers, from fathers to grandmothers to older kids.

The modern nuclear family asks one household to do the job dozens of people used to share. Saxbe points to isolation, the devaluing of caregiving, and pressure to return to work before parents feel ready as the forces that leave new moms drained.

She also studies fatherhood, and her research points to something hopeful: when dads get more involved, mothers' mental health tends to improve. Her book Dad Brain came out in June.
