Fermaculture Farm

Fermaculture Farm Health in a complete circle, from a rich minerally balanced soil, to a properly functioning healthy human body. We farm and we ferment.

We are practising a life that is building the health of our soil, our animals, and therefore ourselves. In farming, we are increasing our soil biodiversity and mineral richness through holistic management, soil testing and mineral balancing, and permaculture. In the kitchen we ferment a lot of our food to increase the biodiversity of our gut flora and keep it healthy, and also because we love the

taste of ferments (we're not just talking kimchi here, but home-made camembert and chevre, home made fizzy drinks, and home cured meat both wild and domesticated). The reason we are doing this is because we spent years buying and eating the best organic produce money could buy but did not see any health benefits associated with it. Why was this we wondered and the deeper we looked the more we came interested in soil health, and how intricately linked it is with our own.

Cat on a cold tin roof, as much as mick does not like cats he sees a certain beauty and function for them in the dairy. A little bit of fresh milk seems a fair trade for some friendly but aloof apex predators living where grain is stored

After such a severe drought and years of bare trees it’s a delight to have the sweet abundance of a fruit harvest- apricots and plums are currently being picked and put under various preservation methods by creative family members (jam, fruit leather, freezing, dehydrating, and just plain eat-em-until-full). I love that my kids get to experience the seasons this way- both the four seasons of the year, plus the macro seasons of drought and abundance. It’s a dance.

We are rocking the Xmas goodies at the farmgate stall. A customer messaged me from the stall yesterday and asked if we had chilli jam. I said we have plums already picked, and home grown chillis, we will give it a go! .... So limited edition organic chilli jam at the stall today. Plus heaps of other goodies including rum balls, decorated gingerbread cookies, and more zucchini’s freshly picked ♥️

Fresh baby carrots picked today from our market garden are at the farmgate stall. Lettuce too. And the gingerbread cookies and honeycomb are back (the girls have been in the kitchen) plus the kraut shelf is fully stocked. And for those of you who love the wild herb stock it’s back! Local wild harvested greens for your cooking or on toast. Yum. Farmgate stall is 2km out of Candelo on Myrtle Mountain Road.

After ten years of resisting making sauerkraut and kimchi to sell, instead preferring to teach people how to make their own through fermentation workshops, along came a global pandemic and orders to stay at home. So along with we opened the farmgate stall and the number of people who have sampled our range of vege ferments has been incredible! And not only sampled, but returned to buy again and again. Thanks to our locals and passers-through, who have supported our stall and given me such great feedback on the ferments. Some have been surprised when their kimchi popped out if the bottle when they opened it (it’s very young and full of pep!) and others have loved trying new flavours like the Japanese pickle and the red cabbage/ginger/seaweed ‘power-kraut’. The main reason for my delight is that I know that gut floras everywhere will be relishing this boost, this little kick to help digest food and make the immune system strong. It’s the perfect time to be keeping your body healthy and the lurgies at bay.

It is Saturday- the best day to roll on down to the stall and check out some new goodies. I think most of the beautiful hand-dyed textiles have already sold. But you will find a new range of perfumes, lemons, honeycomb, steak rub, garlic salt, green tomato chutney and watercolour bird postcards. Hope to see you there.
