Our service men and women operate in some of the most complex and high-risk environments in the world. In war zones, their actions are guided by duty, training, and lawful orders—reflecting the realities of those situations.

In civilian settings, very different roles, responsibilities, and decision-making frameworks apply—grounded in community, care, and everyday life.

We acknowledge this distinction and recognise the weight carried by those who serve. Above all, we support their safety, wellbeing, and protection—now and into the future.

We also extend our sincere thanks to A/Prof and Colonel Chris Cunneen for his outstanding military service spanning over 40 years, providing dedicated medical support, including multiple deployments to East Timor, the Bougainville Islands, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Your service and commitment are deeply respected.

Following recent wet conditions across Queensland, several cases of melioidosis have been reported. This serious bacterial infection, found in soil and contaminated water, can cause severe illnesses such as ulcers, pneumonia, and sepsis.

Ensure workers are aware of the risks and take necessary precautions when working in wet or muddy conditions.

💧 Steps to reduce the risk:

✅ Use machinery to remove debris where possible.
✅ Provide protective clothing (long sleeves, boots, gloves) and ensure regular washing of work clothes.
✅ Ensure workers wash hands after removing PPE and before eating, smoking, or touching their face.
✅ Encourage workers to clean and cover cuts with waterproof dressings.
✅ Prevent water from pooling around work areas near sheds and buildings.

Marine stinger safety–update to Guideline 9.4.5 - First Aid Management of Marine Envenomation ⚠️🐙

Dive and snorkelling operators should be aware that ANZCOR has recently updated their guidance on marine envenomation.

Important note: These updates do not change the recommended treatment, but they do provide additional advice regarding potentially fatal envenomation’s.

Operators are encouraged to review the changes carefully to ensure safety practices remain aligned with the latest recommendations.

Stinger safety reminders:
✅ Supply and encourage protective swimwear (full body lycra suits or neoprene wetsuits)
✅ Inspect gear regularly for damage
✅ Brief snorkellers and divers clearly on risks, symptoms, and first aid procedures
✅ Ensure staff are trained and ready to respond to marine stings
