I hear it all the time.
“I just want to feel happy again.”
And usually, the person saying it is exhausted.
They’re working, parenting, managing relationships, answering messages, thinking about what needs to be done next, scrolling, organising, fixing, worrying.
Even when they sit down, their mind doesn’t as we live in a world where we are constantly being poked and prodded for our attention.
A notification, an email, someone needing something another job to do.
Another problem to solve.
And after a while, we can become so used to being “on” that we forget what it feels like to simply be and not be doing.
We start looking for happiness as though it’s something else we need to achieve.
But I reckon we’ve got it backwards.
So much of our happiness and wellbeing comes when we can relax, let go and feel safe enough to stop doing for a moment.
Because happiness isn’t necessarily a permanent state we arrive at.
It comes in moments.
❤️The warmth of the sun on your face.
❤️Sitting quietly with a cup of tea.
❤️Laughing with someone you love.
❤️Walking without your phone.
❤️Music playing while you cook.
That beautiful feeling when, just for a moment, there is nowhere else you need to be. But we can miss those moments when our nervous system is constantly activated and our mind is already racing towards the next thing.
Sometimes the answer isn't adding another self-care routine to your already overflowing life.
Sometimes it's putting something down.
👍Turning the phone off.
👍Saying no.
👍Sitting in silence.
👍Taking the pressure off yourself to be productive.
👍Letting yourself rest without having to earn it.
You don't have to chase happiness every minute of the day.
Create a little more space and slow your body down.
Let go of something you don't need to carry today.
And notice the small moments of happiness that have been trying to find you all along.
Maybe today, instead of asking “What else do I need to do?” ask yourself:
What could I let go of?
