Beehives in the Redlands, (including ours) were completely decimated earlier this year by either wax moth or Varroa mite. Gardeners in the area desperately missed the buzz of bees and their pollination services.
In the meantime, I was searching the garden daily for other pollinators such as native bees, hover flies, wasps, beetles, flies and butterflies.
But then …
After months of buzz free silence, I would find a bee or two in the garden.
Gradually, honey bee numbers have grown, just a couple more each week, until this week when joy of joys, I’ve found the poppies that were last year a madhouse of bees, now have a few happy bees lolling about in them. I’m so excited to say the least.
But my question is, are these bees from a growing wild hive nearby that has built a resistance to the mite, or is there a local beekeeper with a happy hive nearby?
We know they travel up to 3 km but I’m hoping this hive is closer
We’d also love to repopulate our hive boxes, so are on the lookout for a swarm to capture.

Some of our winter crops have gone to seed now that a warm spring is upon us. So I have kept the healthiest and best plants in order to save seed so I can grow them next season and share some through our seeds network at Redland organic growers. The gardens been very generous this last month. That means I’ve been busy creating jams and pickles, chutneys and cordials.
You’ll find Elderberry and ginger cordial
Mulberry jam and mulberry chutney
Strawberry jam
Strawberry and rhubarb jam
Chilli sauce
Mustard pickle
Choko and rosella chutney
And many more … well also have organic veg, herbs and my beautiful spring wildflower posies.

Saturday morning Garden gate stall from nine till 1130 will have wonderful vegetables herbs pickles, jams and cordial
I’ve just made a batch of elderberry and ginger cordial with just four bottles available yep it’s that precious
