If your headaches tend to build as the day goes on, your posture might be more involved than you think.

When we spend long hours looking at screens, hunching over a desk or looking down at our phones, it places ongoing strain on the muscles, joints and nerves of the neck and upper back.

Over time that strain does not just stay in the neck, it can travel, starting at the base of the skull and working its way up into the temples, behind the eyes and across the forehead.

Some signs your headaches might be posture related:

✦ Pain that starts in your neck before spreading to your head

One of the questions we get asked most often. Is acupuncture safe?

The short answer is yes, when it is performed by a qualified practitioner using sterile single use needles, acupuncture is generally considered very safe.

Like any healthcare treatment, your practitioner will always take the time to understand your individual circumstances and discuss anything relevant to you before your session begins.

At The Urban Alchemist our acupuncturist is experienced, qualified and genuinely committed to making sure you feel informed, comfortable and completely at ease from the moment you arrive.

Fun fact of the day 💪

The masseter muscle, your main chewing muscle right here on the side of your jaw, is the strongest muscle in your entire body weight for weight.

And it works alongside the hardest substance in your entire body. Your molars.

The strongest muscle. The hardest substance. Working together every single day just so you can eat your lunch.

Pretty incredible when you think about it.

But when that muscle is overworked, tense or constantly clenching? It stops being incredible and starts being the reason you wake up with headaches, jaw pain and tinnitus that just will not quit.

Hi I'm Maddz, one of the remedial massage therapists and myotherapists here at The Urban Alchemist 💚

When someone comes in with jaw pain or TMJ issues, I never just look at the jaw.

Because here is the thing. There is a part of your brain stem called the trigeminocervical complex that acts like a switchboard between your jaw, your neck muscles, your trapezius, your SCM and other parts of your head and face. They all feed into the same junction. Which means they all affect each other.

So yes I will treat your jaw. But I also want to know what is going on in your neck. Your shoulders. Your whole upper body.
And sometimes I want to know what is going on in your life too.

I am not a counsellor and I am not going to try and solve your stress for you. But stress shows up in the body in very real ways. And while I cannot treat the cause of it, I can absolutely help you manage what it is doing to your muscles, your jaw and your nervous system.
That is always a really good conversation to have.
