Six years after Black Summer, questions remain about what bushfire smoke exposure means for the health of unborn babies.

A new article from ABC News and Grist explores growing evidence that exposure to bushfire smoke during pregnancy may have lasting impacts on children’s health. The story features insights from DEA members Professor Stephen Robson and Dr Arnagretta Hunter.

📣 DEA QLD’s screening of Taykayna is happening this Thursday!

Through the power of personal stories, be taken on a journey to the vast and threatened landscapes of Australia’s largest temperate rainforest in northwest Lutruwita / Tasmania.

This area, known as Takayna / Tarkine, is one of the last wild places on Earth.

‘Takayna / Tarkine — the Heart of Lutruwita’ is an inspiring and hopeful film about the battle to defend Takayna from mining and logging.

These people are fighting for its protection, and you can as well.

Join us to help support the Bob Brown Foundation in its fight to save Takayna.

📆Thursday 28th May, 6pm
📍Mu'Ooz, 54 Mollison St, West End QLD 4101

Happy International Day for Biological Diversity!

Today is a perfect opportunity to both celebrate the rich and unique biodiversity in Australia, and reflect on the biodiversity crisis we have in this country and the rest of the world.

Our health and wellbeing depend on rich biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Biodiversity in Australia is precious, fragile and in desperate need of our protection.

This year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact”, highlights the power of local action to help halt and reverse biodiversity loss and build a future where people and nature flourish together.

Victoria is getting a sobering warning about the health and economic costs of climate change.

New research has found that more than $57 billion worth of infrastructure, including roads, rail, hospitals and energy assets, is at risk of damage or destruction from extreme heat, bushfires and floods by 2030.

Climate action is smart health and economic policy. Our government must urgently transition us away from all forms of fossil fuel combustion and embrace the health and economic benefits of renewable energy.

While the 2026-27 Federal Budget includes several welcome measures supporting renewable energy and environmental protection, it remains a missed opportunity to respond to the scale of the intertwined health and environmental challenges facing Australia.

Overall, the budget does not reflect the urgency and gravity of the threat to Australians’ health and wellbeing posed by the interconnected crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

A step in the right direction. Well done team! 💪💚

A step in the right direction.

Well done team! 💪💚

A joint win! Last September, Doctors for the Environment Australia, Healthy Futures and CAHA joined up with Market Forces to call for HESTA Super Fund to stop investing in fossil fuel companies.

We’re happy to share that in April, HESTA took a public stance against Woodside’s oil and gas growth strategy. While HESTA needs to do a lot more, it's definitely a step forward!

If you are a HESTA member, this is a great opportunity to reach out to the fund, acknowledge this position, and encourage the fund to go further in divesting from all fossil fuel companies.
