๐Ÿซ Asthma + allergies - whatโ€™s the connection?

Asthma and allergies can sometimes occur together, but having allergies doesnโ€™t automatically mean a child has asthma.

And when it comes to wheezing, there isnโ€™t always a simple answer. Young children can wheeze during viral infections such as colds without necessarily having persistent asthma.

So how can parents make sense of it?

๐ŸŒฟ When do symptoms occur?
๐ŸŒฟ Do they follow a seasonal pattern?
๐ŸŒฟ Are there particular triggers?
๐ŸŒฟ Do symptoms happen with colds or infections?
๐ŸŒฟ Have symptoms changed over time?

Looking at the bigger picture can help your childโ€™s healthcare professional understand their symptoms and whether further assessment may be appropriate.

This Asthma Week (1โ€“7 September), we're raising awareness about children's breathing and the connection between respiratory and allergic health.

Dental Health Week | 3โ€“9 August

Did you know your child's dentist may be one of the first healthcare professionals to notice signs of mouth breathing?

Because dentists regularly examine the mouth, teeth and developing jaws, they are often well placed to identify patterns that may be worth discussing with your GP.

Persistent mouth breathing can sometimes be associated with blocked nasal airflow, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, or sleep-disordered breathing. It can also contribute to a dry mouth, which reduces saliva's natural ability to protect teeth.

This Dental Health Week, we're highlighting how dentists, GPs, ENT specialists and paediatric sleep physicians work together to support children's health.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Swipe through to learn:
๐Ÿฆท Why saliva is so important for healthy teeth
๐Ÿ‘ƒ Why persistent mouth breathing matters
๐Ÿค When it's worth raising concerns with your GP
๐Ÿ’™ How different healthcare professionals work together to support children

If your child regularly breathes through their mouth while sleeping, snores most nights, or wakes with a consistently dry mouth, it's worth mentioning at their next GP or dental appointment.

Sleep Health Week | 3โ€“9 August

Sleep isn't just about getting through the night - it's one of the most important building blocks for a child's health, learning and development.

This week we're sharing practical, evidence-based information from our Paediatric Respiratory & Sleep Medicine team to help families better understand:
๐ŸŒ™ How much sleep children actually need
๐Ÿ˜ด Why poor sleep doesn't always look like tiredness
๐Ÿ’ญ Common myths about snoring
๐Ÿ‘ƒ Why mouth breathing matters
๐Ÿ’ฌ When it's worth mentioning sleep concerns to your GP

Many sleep problems develop gradually, and the signs can be easy to miss. Sometimes they show up as difficulty concentrating at school, changes in behaviour, irritability, or regular snoring rather than obvious daytime sleepiness.

Our hope is that these posts give parents the confidence to recognise when something is simply part of normal childhood - and when it's worth asking a few more questions!
