๐ŸŒผ 40 Years of Growing Hope

This year, weโ€™re celebrating 40 years of Daffodil Day and the incredible progress made for people affected by cancer.

When Daffodil Day first took root in 1986, the 5-year cancer survival rate was around 46%. Today, thanks in part to the generosity of communities supporting cancer research, that figure has risen to 72%. ๐Ÿ’›

Thatโ€™s 40 years of research, hope and people coming together to improve cancer outcomes.

Weโ€™ve come a long way โ€” but there is still more to do. We hope the next 40 years of cancer research brings us closer to a future where everyone diagnosed with cancer can survive their diagnosis and receive a treatment plan thatโ€™s right for them.

๐ŸŒผ Together, we can keep growing hope.

๐Ÿง  Brain Injury: Many Pathways, One Community

This Brain Injury Awareness Week, weโ€™re recognising the many pathways that can lead to brain injury โ€” and the importance of a connected, understanding and supportive community.

Around 1 in 45 Australians are living with a brain injury, with almost 3 in 4 people affected being under 65. Brain injury can happen to anyone, at any stage of life, and may result from falls, car or cycling accidents, contact sports, stroke, illness, dementia, assault and family or domestic violence.

Sometimes, a brain injury isnโ€™t immediately recognised or formally diagnosed โ€” making awareness and understanding even more important.

Whether youโ€™re living with brain injury, supporting a family member or friend, providing care, or working in health or community services, we all have a role to play.

Together, we can help create communities where people affected by brain injury feel connected, supported, included and empowered to live self-determined lives. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ”จ Tradies โ€“ your body is your most important tool.
Take care of it this Tradies National Health Month. ๐Ÿฆบ

Whether you're lifting, climbing, digging or spending long days on the tools, the physical demands of trade work can take their toll.

Did you know?
๐Ÿ”น 68% of tradies experience back, neck or shoulder pain.
๐Ÿ”น More than half worry about whether they'll be able to stay in their trade until retirement due to physical strain.
๐Ÿ”น Yet only 1 in 10 regularly see a physiotherapist to help prevent injuries.

At Smith St Medical Centre, we're here to help keep tradies healthy, strong and on the job.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ Christine, our experienced Physiotherapist, can help with:
โœ”๏ธ Back, neck and shoulder pain
โœ”๏ธ Workplace injuries
โœ”๏ธ Injury prevention
โœ”๏ธ Improving strength, mobility and recovery

๐Ÿฉบ Our team of GPs can also support your health with:
โœ”๏ธ Assessment and treatment of work-related injuries
โœ”๏ธ Pain management
โœ”๏ธ Mental health support
โœ”๏ธ Chronic condition management
โœ”๏ธ Referrals for imaging, specialists and allied health when needed

Don't wait until pain stops you from doing what you do best. Looking after your health now can help keep you working and doing the things you enjoy for years to come.

๐Ÿ”” Important Update to Our Consultation Fees ๐Ÿ””

From Monday 20 July 2026, our consultation fees will be increasing.

This is our first fee adjustment in over two years. During that time, the costs of providing high-quality healthcare have continued to rise. To ensure we can continue delivering the standard of care our patients expect, a fee increase is unfortunately necessary.

We remain committed to providing accessible, patient-focused healthcare for our community. Medicare rebates will continue to apply to eligible consultations, and our existing bulk billing arrangements for eligible patients will remain unchanged.

If you have any questions, or would like a copy of our updated fee schedule, please speak with our reception team.

Thank you for your continued trust and support.

๐Ÿ‘จ Men's Health Week | 15โ€“21 June

This Men's Health Week, we're encouraging all men to make their health a priority.

Too often, men put off seeing a doctor, even when something doesn't feel quite right. Yet regular check-ups and early intervention can make a significant difference to long-term health and wellbeing.

Whether it's a general health check, blood pressure, skin check, mental health, prostate health, heart health or simply discussing a concern that's been on your mind, our GPs are here to help.

Don't wait until something becomes serious. Looking after your health is one of the best investments you can make for yourself and your family.

๐Ÿ“… Book an appointment with one of our GPs today and take the first step towards better health.

๐Ÿšจ Bowel Cancer Awareness ๐Ÿšจ

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, but it is also one of the most preventable and treatable when detected early.

Every week:
โ–ช๏ธ 286 Australians are diagnosed with bowel cancer
โ–ช๏ธ 103 Australians lose their lives to the disease

While the risk increases with age, bowel cancer can affect people of all ages. That's why it's important to know the symptoms, participate in recommended screening, and speak with your GP if you have any concerns.

Symptoms can include:
โœ”๏ธ Changes in bowel habits
โœ”๏ธ Blood in your stool
โœ”๏ธ Unexplained abdominal pain
โœ”๏ธ Unexplained weight loss
โœ”๏ธ Ongoing fatigue

Don't ignore the signs. Early detection saves lives.

If you're due for screening or have concerns about your bowel health, book an appointment with our team today.

Supporting the health and wellbeing of our community goes beyond the walls of our clinics. Staying active through sport is one of the best ways to maintain physical and mental health, build connections, and create a stronger community.

For more than 70 years, Smith St Medical Centre has been proud to serve the Hunter community as a family-owned medical practice.

That's why we're proud to support our local volunteer-run sporting clubs Kotara BEARS Juniors and Kotara South Football Club.

These dedicated volunteers give their time to create opportunities for people of all ages to stay active, develop friendships, and enjoy the benefits of being part of a team.

Thank you to all the volunteers, players, coaches, and families who help make community sport possible. We're proud to play a small part in supporting the clubs that help keep our community healthy, active, and connected.

๐Ÿงก Supporting our community. Caring for generations. ๐Ÿงก
