Volunteers to Assist Children with Disabilities

Volunteers to Assist Children with Disabilities Not for profit Non-Government Organization located in Australia and Sri Lanka.

Volunteers to Assist Children with Disabilities Limited (VACD) is a not for profit, non-government, limited liability charity registered in Australia and Sri Lanka that is administered by a team of dedicated volunteers. What we do:
• Establish VACD centers in key townships across Sri Lanka where children with disabilities will be provided with special education,
life skills, vocational, music and

dance training.
• Sponsor and equip clinics at local hospitals to facilitate regular health checkups, medication, therapy, and rehabilitation for children with disabilities.
• Provide children with disabilities with hearing aids, spectacles, walkers, wheel chairs, and subsidize travel and accommodation when special medical attention is needed.
• Provide skills training and micro finance to parents of children with disabilities to supplement their household income.
• Engage with the local community, businesses, government, departments and ministries to eliminate social stigma and isolation and uplift the welfare and rights of children with disabilities and their families.
• Provide monthly allowances for educational purposes for disabled children with academic potential or gifted siblings.

The children from VACD’s Badulla Centre together with their educators all wore pristine white clothes and visited the local temple to mark Wesak day and received an inspiring message and blessings from a Buddhist priest.

Later they partook of a simple meal of milk rice which had been prepared by the parents.

Wesak is one of the most important cultural and religious festivals traditionally observed by Bhuddists all over the world, as it commemorates the birth, death and enlightenment of Gautama Buddha.

In Sri Lanka is celebrated over a few days when Bhuddists don white clothing and lay simple offerings at the feet of their teacher, refrain from eating meat and decorate their homes and premises with lanterns.

The older children at VACD’s Badulla Centre together with their educators and family members gathered together to make by hand the traditional lanterns that burn brightly at Wesak time. The Centre was transformed with their handiwork just in time for Wesak.

The children and carers of VACD’s Badulla Centre were also treated to an excursion that widened their horizons and gave them respite from their daily routines.

They were afforded the opportunity visit a Bhuddist temple, experience the thrill of playing in the surf and beach at Polhena Beach, and tour Pigeon Island.

When it was lunchtime they relished a modest yet tasty meal prepared by the teachers and parents.

Heartfelt thanks to the Social Services Department of the Assistant Government Agent’s Office (Divisional Secretariat) who organised and sponsored an excursion for children of VACD Ambagasdowa centre and their carers.
The children and carers were excited to spend an enjoyable and wonderful day on the beach at Arugam Bay

It has been observed in the past just how beneficial such excursions are for the children’s overall health, and they are calmer and happier.

The parents of VACD’s Bandarawela Centre who wished to participate in the mushroom cultivation project were eager to attend an instruction session presented by Ms. Manoja Prasanthi who is an expert on the subject.
We are grateful to Ms Manoji who very generously volunteered to share her expertise based on practical experience at her farm.

It is envisaged that mushroom cultivation will be a valuable source of supplementary income for VACD parents, as there is a ready market for their produce.

Parents of each VACD Centre – in Badulla, Bandarawela and Ambagasdowa are given the opportunity to serve on committees to give them a say in the running of the centres.

The committees serve their centres in the areas of Education & Training, Health & Nutrition, Sports & Culture and Finance & Budgeting and ensure transparency and good administration in these aspects of the centres.

These photos show VACD Sri Lanka Secretary (Retd. Col. Kumarasinghe) together with office staff at Bandarawela Centre conducting one of these committee meetings.

Parents of the children who attend the Bandarawela Centre of VACD got together and worked hard during a working bee held with the intention of clearing out the weeds and overgrowth in the grounds, in an effort to have a suitable clear space in the premises to establish a long-awaited mushroom growing project.

It is always heartening to see the enthusiasm and hard work of the parents in maintaining the centres, as it shows a wonderful sense of ownership and pride in the premises and an admirable sense of unity amongst the parents.

It is envisioned that armed with some practical knowledge and experience in the cultivation of mushrooms, families of VACD Bandarawela will be inspired to engage in this activity in their own homes and supply their produce to the local community, thereby supplementing their incomes.

It is hoped that the economy of the community as a whole will be uplifted as a result of this venture, which is one of the main aims of our mission.

To mark Sinhala and Tamil new year, at the VACD Ambagasdowa Centre there were tables laden with a variety of traditional savoury and sweet dishes, most of which were proudly made voluntarily by the parents. There were performances of songs and dances, fancy dress parades, selection of the festival king and queen, and traditional games.

A joyful and fun time was had by all, as they all united to work together regardless of race, religion or caste to make the event a success and enjoyable for all.
