TRAIN YOUR EYE 👀

Since you guys liked the last one so much…

This space behind the jaw/TMJ region is something I assess regularly during postural and functional evaluations.

Why? Well, asymmetry here can sometimes reflect much more than just the head and neck - the body compensates as a connected system.

When a horse is:
• unloading a hindlimb
• asymmetrical through the pelvis
• bracing through the thoracolumbar region
• struggling with thoracic sling support

The front end often adapts too.

That can show up as:
➡ uneven muscle fill behind the jaw
➡ altered poll posture
➡ asymmetrical rein contact
➡ tension through the upper cervical region
➡ subtle changes in facial symmetry

This doesn’t mean:
A hollow behind the jaw = pelvic problem.

But, it does show how interconnected posture and compensation are on a horse.

If you have been lucky enough to get Peak Pulse treat your horses. I look at the whole horse, especially symmetry!!

If you have been lucky enough to get Peak Pulse treat your horses. I look at the whole horse, especially symmetry!!

TRAIN YOUR EYE 👀

Most owners stand beside their horse - very few stand behind them and actually look properly.

From this angle we can start assessing:

• symmetry through the wither and thoracic sling
• scapular muscle development
• topline contour
• ribcage shape and loading patterns
• hindquarter muscle balance
• overall spinal tracking and posture

Small asymmetries don’t automatically mean something is “wrong”, but they can tell us a lot about how a horse is organising load through their body.

Posture reflects movement habits, compensation strategies, saddle influence, rider asymmetry, limb loading and overall balance.

Often, these subtle changes appear long before obvious performance issues do.

This is why I always encourage owners to:
➡ stand behind their horse
➡ compare left vs right
➡ look at muscle shape, not just size
➡ learn what ‘normal’ looks like for their horse

Because posture is information - not the diagnosis, but most definitely a clue 👀
