Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the underlying cause of 1 in 4 deaths in Australia?

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, an estimated 1.3 million Australians are currently living with heart, stroke or vascular disease β€” and around 156 acute coronary events happen every single day.

Those are confronting numbers. But here's what often gets overlooked in the conversation about heart health:
Chronic stress is one of the biggest and most underestimated contributors to cardiovascular disease.

When your body is stuck in fight or flight mode β€” which for many of us is most of the time β€” your heart rate stays elevated, your blood pressure creeps up, your blood vessels stay constricted and your body keeps pumping out stress hormones it was never designed to sustain long term.

Over time, that takes a toll. On your heart. On your arteries. On your whole cardiovascular system.

This is where reflexology can offer something genuinely meaningful. By gently stimulating the nervous system through the feet, reflexology encourages the body to shift out of fight or flight and into rest and digest β€” reducing stress hormones, supporting healthy blood pressure, improving circulation and giving your heart the break it deserves.

Many of my clients come to me managing high blood pressure alongside their medication. What they notice over time is a greater sense of calm, better sleep and a body that feels less like it's constantly bracing for impact.

Reflexology is not a replacement for medical care or medication β€” please always follow your doctor's advice. But as a gentle, non-invasive complement to your existing heart health management, it's worth considering.

Have you ever fallen asleep during a treatment?
You came in saying you were too stressed, too wired, too much going on in your head to switch off.
And then at some point in your treatment β€” you were snoring.
Some of you fell asleep mid sentence. One moment you were telling me about your week and the next β€” out like a light.
Others didn't snore. They just went very, very quiet. And then when I gently let you know we were finished, you looked at me like I'd asked you to climb a mountain.
"Already?"
Yes. Already. πŸ₯±
And then there are my absolute favourites β€” the ones who just... don't want to leave. Who sit in the chair for an extra five minutes because getting up feels like too much effort. Who drive home on autopilot and text me later to say they slept better that night than they had in months.
Falling asleep during a reflexology session isn't rude, and it doesn't have to be embarrassing. It's actually your nervous system finally got the memo and switched off.
If you've never experienced that kind of rest β€” come and find out what your body does when you finally give it permission to stop. πŸ‘£

New research is confirming what my diabetic clients are already experiencing. πŸ‘£
If you or someone you love is living with Type 2 diabetes, you'll know that the pain, tingling, numbness and discomfort that comes with diabetic neuropathy can be relentless β€” and that managing it often feels like a full time job alongside everything else diabetes demands of your body.
Most people know about podiatry and medication for diabetic foot care. Fewer people know that reflexology is another option worth exploring.
A 2026 randomised controlled trial published in Pain Management Nursing found that women with Type 2 diabetes who received regular foot reflexology sessions showed significant reductions in neuropathic pain scores compared to those who received routine care alone. Improvements were also seen in sensory perception β€” meaning the feet became more responsive to touch and sensation over time.
The researchers concluded that foot reflexology can serve as a valuable complement to conventional diabetes management β€” not instead of medical care, but alongside it.
This reflects what I see in my own practice here in Chinchilla. πŸ’›
My diabetic clients come in with a range of symptoms β€” general pain, stress, poor sleep and neuropathic discomfort in their feet. Results with neuropathic pain in particular can take time, because of the nature of the condition β€” but many of my clients notice gradual improvements in comfort, sleep and overall wellbeing with regular sessions.
If you're living with diabetes and haven't considered reflexology as part of your care β€” it might be worth a conversation. 🌿

Upcoming EFTPOS changes.

You may have heard about the recent government changes to merchant fees β€” from 1 October 2026, small businesses like mine will no longer be able to pass on EFTPOS surcharges to clients.

Currently I charge a small 1.6% surcharge on card transactions to cover the cost of using the payment system. From October, that cost will sit with me rather than being passed on.

So if you'd like to help support Alpha Vitality as a small local business β€” paying with cash where possible from now on would be really appreciated.

It's a small thing that makes a genuine difference to a one-woman show! 😊

Of course card payments will always be welcome β€” I just wanted to be transparent about what's changing and why.

As always, thank you so much for your continued support. It means everything. 🌿

Alright fellas β€” hear me out.....
I know what you're thinking, "Reflexology? That's not for me."
And yet β€” some of my best clients are blokes. Truck drivers. Tradies. Blokes who wouldn't be caught dead in a day spa but don't mind sitting in a recliner chair with their shoes off for an hour while their body has a complete reset.
Because here's the thing nobody tells you about reflexology:
You keep your clothes on. Shoes and socks off β€” that's it. No awkward draping.
One of my truck driver clients told me his body doesn't ache nearly as much after long hauls since he started coming in. Lower back tension β€” gone. Driver fatigue β€” reduced, because he's actually sleeping properly.
Speaking of sleep β€” the number of blokes who come in not sleeping well and leave that night completely knocked out is genuinely impressive. One client told me he started coming because he wanted to quit drinking for his health β€” and found that proper relaxation and better sleep made it so much easier to follow through.
That's what happens when your nervous system finally gets to switch off properly - things get easier.
Now I'm not saying reflexology is magic. I'm saying it works with your body's own systems to do what they're supposed to do β€” recover, repair, reset.
You service your ute. You service your body. Same logic.
Still think it's not for you?
Come in once. Prove me wrong.

Hormonal Changes...

Did you know that approximately 1.2 million Australian women are currently experiencing menopause, with another 2 million navigating perimenopause? That's an enormous number of women quietly managing hot flushes, broken sleep, mood changes, brain fog, anxiety and exhaustion β€” often while still holding everything together for everyone around them.

Research consistently shows a 40-60% rise in anxiety and depression rates during the perimenopausal transition β€” and yet so many women are still expected to just push through.
Here's what doesn't get talked about enough though.
Hormonal changes don't just affect your body β€” they affect your nervous system. When oestrogen fluctuates, the nervous system becomes more reactive, more sensitive, harder to calm. Sleep suffers. Mood suffers. Everything feels harder than it should.

This is where reflexology can offer something really gentle but genuinely meaningful. πŸ‘£ By working with specific reflex points on the feet that correspond to the endocrine system β€” including the ovaries, uterus, pituitary and hypothalamus β€” reflexology encourages the nervous system to shift out of fight or flight and into rest and restore. That deep, whole body relaxation isn't just pleasant. It creates the conditions your body needs to find its own balance again.

My clients navigating perimenopause and menopause often report better sleep, reduced anxiety, improved mood and a greater sense of calm β€” not because reflexology replaces medical care, but because a regulated nervous system copes so much better with everything hormonal change throws at it. πŸ’›

Let's bust some reflexology myths! πŸ˜„πŸ‘£
I hear the same things all the time β€” and they're completely understandable. So let me set the record straight.

"I'm too ticklish"
You'd be surprised! Reflexology uses firm, deliberate pressure β€” not the light, feathery touch that triggers ticklishness. Most self-proclaimed ticklish people are completely fine within the first few minutes. In fact, do you want to know the most ticklish part of the whole treatment? Wiping your feet at the beginning. After that β€” you're golden. Don't let this one stop you. 😊

"My feet are too ugly/embarrassing"
I have seen every kind of foot imaginable in ten years of practice. Cracked heels, unruly nails, calloused soles, hairy toes β€” genuinely, nothing surprises me and nothing is judged. I don't see ugly feet. I see feet that have worked hard and deserve some attention. πŸ’›

"It's just a foot massage β€” is it really worth it?"
This is the big one. Reflexology is not a foot massage. A foot massage manipulates the muscles and soft tissue of the foot for localised comfort. Reflexology works specifically on the nerves in the feet, sending relaxation signals directly to the brain. When that happens, the fight or flight nervous system takes a back seat and the rest and digest system comes back online β€” triggering a whole body response that a foot massage simply doesn't reach. It's the difference between treating the foot and treating the whole person through the foot. πŸ‘£

"Why do I feel tired after a session?"
Because your whole body just exhaled β€” possibly for the first time in a long time. That tiredness is your nervous system finally standing down. It's not a bad sign β€” it's your body doing exactly what it needed to do.
One honest note: for those living with chronic pain conditions, you may experience a temporary increase in fatigue or discomfort for 1-2 days after a session. This is a normal healing response and settles quickly β€” and it's always something I discuss with you beforehand.

Still have questions? Drop them below β€” I love busting myths πŸ˜€

What does reflexology actually do to your brain? πŸ§ πŸ‘£

Most people assume reflexology is just about the feet. And yes β€” it starts there. But here's what's happening above the neck while your nervous system is quietly unwinding below it.
In 2024, researchers used fMRI brain scans to study what happens in the brain during a reflexology session. What they found was fascinating β€” reflexology created measurable blood flow to areas of the brain related to both physical and mental functions of the body. Not just the areas connected to the feet β€” but regions linked to how we think, feel and function. 🧠
This helps explain something my clients tell me regularly β€” that they leave not just physically relaxed, but mentally clearer. Less foggy. More themselves.
Specific reflex points on the feet correspond to the head, pituitary gland and hypothalamus β€” areas that influence neural communication, stress hormones and overall brain function. When these points are stimulated, the brain gets the signal to stand down from stress mode and shift into something quieter and clearer.
And then there's sleep. Research has shown that reflexology induces changes in brain wave activity consistent with deep sleepiness and sleep β€” suggesting it could be used as a non-pharmaceutical way to support better rest. πŸ’€
So when my clients say they feel like a different person after a session β€” clearer, calmer, more focused β€” that's not imagination. That's their brain responding to something very real. πŸ’›

"The time to relax is when you don't have time for it." β€” Sydney J. Harris

Funny how that works, isn't it? When we're young we're too busy to slow down. Too much to do, too many responsibilities, too many people needing us. And then one day β€” the kids have grown, the career has settled, the diary has space β€” and the body quietly presents its bill for all those years of running on empty.

Half of my clients are over 60. And do you know what they all have in common? They've finally given themselves permission to be looked after. Not because something is terribly wrong. But because they've discovered what it feels like to genuinely rest β€” and they're not willing to give that up.

Whether you're 25 or 85, your nervous system needs the same thing β€” space to exhale, reset and restore. Reflexology doesn't care how old you are. It just meets you exactly where you are. πŸ’›
