After several wonderful weeks teaching throughout Europe, Prue is looking forward to returning to the clinic.

This teaching tour provided the opportunity to share ideas, continue learning, and build connections with osteopaths from Germany, Poland, Finland, Denmark, Lithuania, France and the United Kingdom. One of the greatest privileges of teaching is that it is never one way. Every course brings thoughtful discussion, new perspectives and lasting friendships.

The lectures explored topics including blood flow dynamics in relation to joint and musculoskeletal concerns, visceral complaints, lymphatic and venous flow, the aorta, peripheral circulation, and the role these play in supporting healthy blood pressure regulation, along with many other aspects of osteopathic care.

At the heart of osteopathy is the understanding that the body has an inherent capacity for self healing and self regulation. By working with these principles, our aim is to support the body’s own ability to adapt, recover and function as well as possible.

It is always a privilege to travel, share knowledge, and learn alongside colleagues from around the world. At the same time, there is something especially meaningful about returning home and bringing those experiences, ideas and renewed inspiration back to the clinic and to the people who place their trust in us.

Prue will be back in the clinic from Thursday and is looking forward to seeing everyone again.☺️

Do you breathe through your nose… or your mouth? 🤔

Most people never think about it, but it can influence more than you might expect.
😴: Sleep
⚡:️ Energy
🗣: Breathing
🦷: Jaw and facial development

And in babies and children:
👶: Feeding and settling
😴: Sleep patterns
🦷: Growth of the palate and midface

Mouth breathing often develops gradually and can go unnoticed, but over time it may begin to shape how the body functions.

Breastfeeding isn’t as instinctive as we’re often told.

In clinic, I often see families who feel like they should be getting it right straight away — but the reality is that feeding is a skill that develops between both Mum and baby together🤍

Some babies come on and off the breast, fall asleep quickly, or make clicking sounds during feeding.

There are many physical factors that can influence feeding, including:
• How your baby coordinates suck, swallow and breathing
• Tension through the jaw, neck or body
• Posture and positioning
• Fatigue during feeds

Osteopathy can help support these factors, while working alongside lactation consultants to support both structure and feeding technique 👶

It's been a cold 🥶but happy holiday so far in Germany visiting family and friends.

Prue was recently teaching at a weekend osteopathy seminar to other Osteopaths here in Melbourne.

Continue professional Development is something we at BFOSC recognise as an important part of being an osteopath as remaining up to date and striving to continue learning is important for delivering our best to our patients.

Holly and Lauren were extremely grateful to undertake 3 day course over the weekend called the Rule of the Artery.

This course involves the investigation of the heart and vasculature and the fluid dynamics of the blood. The course also explore the link between the heart, autonomic nervous system and so much more.

Both Holly and Lauren have come back into the clinic even more knowledgeable and high on incredible energy delivered by the amazing faculty that represent to us. Thank you so much Dr Maxwell, Dr Prue Eddie and the rest of the amazing ARCOM faculty.

Did you know that your Osteopath can assess muscle strain and tension around your eyes 👀 ?

This can be linked in with issues such as headache or migraine, eye fatigue or even neck or jaw tension, vertigo or other balance or visual issues.

It can feel a little unusual having your practitioner place their fingers gently around your eyes socket or even the globe of the eye (with your eyes closed).

But usually my patients tell me they find it quite comfortable and many say it’s quite relaxing 😎

Sometimes I give people home based exercises specifically for their eyes, including eye tracking, stretching or exercises that influence body positioning and reflexes that involve the eyes.

Eye and neck tension often go together, so if this sounds like something you experience or can’t get on top of your neck tension, it may be worth someone assessing your eye muscle tension in conjunction with your neck position, posture and muscle tightness.

As someone who experiences migraines, I understand the challenge of untangling the mystery of migraine triggers.

They often occur concurrently, rather than one at a time, which is why it can be tricky to figure out.

Essentially migraines are often the result of multiple small triggers stacking together until the brain tips into attack mode.

I find many patients put it down to food triggers such as cheese, chocolate or msg, but the reality is there’s much more happening underneath.

Some of the most misunderstood are:

Gut health & microbiome changes: 🥦
• Eye strain & vision problems 👀
• Too much or irregular sleep 💤
• Breathing mechanics & stress breathing 🌬
• Subtle dietary factors (timing, hydration, additives) 🥤
• Hormonal fluctuations (beyond just menstrual) 🔁
• Neck & jaw tension 💆‍♀️
• Sensory overload (light, sound, smell, weather) ⛈

Last week felt a little more challenging than most, as I was working while having a migraine from Tuesday until Friday.

Thankfully they don’t happen often and a lot of the time I experience migraines without a headache.

Yes you read that right!

Migraines are not just a bad headache, they’re a complex neurological complaint and may occur with or without pain.

People can get all kinds of symptoms such as:

😇Flashing lights in the eyes, or seeing halos
😳 Numbness or tingling in face, arms or elsewhere
😴 Feel extra sleepy
🤢 Nausea or vomiting
🥱 Use incorrect words or can’t think of the word you want
😢More emotional than usual
🕷Feel like you have creepy crawlies on you
🍄 Foods taste funny, for me everything tends to smell and taste like mushrooms!
💥 Noise and light sensitivity

Now if you haven’t been diagnosed with a migraine previously, or if you have and these are not your usual symptoms, you do need to be seen by a health professional asap.

You may have recognised that lots of these symptoms can also occur with a stroke and yes this needs to be checked out fast.

In my case, I’ve previously seen a Neurologist and had brain scans to rule out the nasty things and these symptoms are within my normal range so I didn’t need to go and do it again.

Thankfully, I have osteo colleagues who helped look after me and gave me a treatment. I do find that when I’m taking good care of myself and with support it’s very rare that I need to take time out or get stuck in bed with a migraine.
