Caring can look like a hundred little things.
Making appointments. Picking up groceries. Sorting paperwork. Driving someone where they need to go. Checking in. Researching options. Having difficult conversations. Or simply being there.

During National Carers Week, we recognise the millions of Australians who provide unpaid care and support to a family member or friend.

Carers come from all walks of life, and many balance their caring role alongside work, study, family commitments and their own wellbeing.

At Retirement Care Solutions, we see how important carers and families can be when navigating aged care and retirement transitions.
This week, we simply want to say: we see you, and we appreciate what you do.

Mum says she’s fine. But something is telling you things aren’t quite the same.

Maybe she’s finding everyday tasks a little harder. Perhaps Dad isn’t getting out as much as he used to. You might be helping more often, checking in more frequently or quietly wondering whether they need some extra support.

But when nothing has actually happened, it can be difficult to know whether you should do anything at all.
You don’t need to wait for a crisis to start asking questions.

Having a conversation early can give you and your family time to understand the options, talk about what Mum or Dad wants and make decisions without the pressure of an urgent situation.

We can help. Book a complimentary discovery call to talk through your situation.

October is Seniors Month!

Across Australia, October brings plenty of opportunities for older Australians to get involved, learn something new and connect with their local communities.

Throughout the month, you’ll find everything from seniors expos and information sessions to social activities, workshops, community events and celebrations.
It can also be a great opportunity for families to attend events together, discover what support and services are available locally, and start conversations about what the future might look like.

Keep an eye on your local council and community organisations to see what’s happening near you this October.

Have you spotted a great Seniors Month event in your area?
Share it in the comments so others can check it out too.

A dementia diagnosis can bring many questions. Not just for the person diagnosed, but for their family too.

While every situation is different, starting conversations and exploring care options early can give you more time to understand what support is available and make informed decisions about the future.

Early planning can help you:
• Consider ways to maintain independence for as long as possible
• Understand the different support and care options available
• Explore what may be needed as circumstances change
• Discuss preferences and priorities while your loved one can be actively involved
• Help the whole family feel more prepared for the road ahead

You don’t need to have every answer today. But understanding your options early can make future decisions easier to navigate.

This Dementia Action Week, consider starting the conversation.

Many people think, “We’re not ready yet.”
But exploring your options early doesn’t mean you have to make a decision now. It simply means you’re better prepared when the time comes.

Starting the conversation early gives you time to:
• Understand the different retirement living and care options available
• Compare retirement villages with residential aged care
• Consider what may work best for your lifestyle and financial situation
• Tour villages and aged care homes to get a feel for the environment, facilities and support available
• Ask questions without the pressure of having to make an urgent decision

The more you understand your options, the more informed and confident you can feel about your future.

You don’t need to wait until there’s a crisis to start planning.

Twice a year, on 20 March and 20 September, Age Pension rates are reviewed and indexed to help keep pace with changes in the cost of living.

But the Age Pension isn’t the only thing affected.

The Basic Daily Fee for residential aged care is linked to the single basic Age Pension rate, with the maximum fee set at 85% of that amount. This means when the Age Pension changes, the Basic Daily Fee can change too.

The Basic Daily Fee contributes towards everyday living costs in residential aged care, such as meals, cleaning, laundry, heating and cooling. It can apply whether someone enters residential care permanently or for a period of respite care.

Depending on your circumstances, other aged care fees and contributions may also apply.

We’ll be sharing a new blog in September explaining the upcoming changes and what they could mean for you or your family.

Understanding aged care fees before making decisions can make the process feel much more manageable.
