I get asked all the time, so here is some good information on the Snowy Mountain Brumbies (where all eight of my boys are from).
I wanted to follow up with a post this morning to say thank you to all the people who have recently joined and become aware of the plight of our Brumbies.
I realise many of you don't know the background and why all of this is happening to our Snowy Brumbies.
The Kosciuszko National Park is 6,900 km2 in very remote and rugged terrain in the sub alpine and alpine area of NSW. This region can see up to 1-2m of snow during the winter. The horses inhabit less that 30% of that total area, all 1500 Brumbies. That's right not 10,000
The Snowy Brumbies have inhabited the area since 1834, when the area was opened up. It has seen mining, sheep and cattle grazing, engineering and ski resorts.
In 1944 it was proclaimed a State Park and in 1949 Snowy Hydro commenced the Hydro Scheme. This forever changed the landscape and hydrology of the mountains. At this time the local mountain people still had grazing leases and managed the horses.
In 1967 it was declared a National Park and in 1969 cattle grazing ceased, influenced by recommendations from the academy of science.
Move forward to 2018 when legislation was enacted to recognise and maintain a small population of Brumbies in Kosciuszko NP due to their cultural heritage connection to the area and people.
2021 The first Wild Horse management plan was developed under the above legislation.
During this time, there has been a small group within the scientific community, who could not accept that an introduced horse could receive Legislative protection over and above our native species and that just wasn't the case at all.
An election and a change of government and this small faction now had the Governments ear and access to the purse strings. They commenced a campaign of hate and sold a narrative to the public that was built on a shady foundation of lies, corruption and collusion.
They rewrote the management plan; they bought science to prop up their ideology and the minister signed off on newly created safe operating procedure allowing them to reintroduce aerial culling of the Brumbies.
They have been successful in already decimating the populations and ignoring and eventually repealing the legislation that was put in place to protect the Brumbies.
There has been a parliamentary inquiry and documents were not presented, Dodge signatures declared, but not sighted, more webs of deceit spun and the most outstanding of all- The RSPCA signed off on it! Despite prosecuting NPWS in 2000 for the very same thing in Guy Fawkes National Park.
The RSPCA recommended they install 360 degree cameras on the helicopters for welfare transparency and government said no and gave them some money instead. This alone is appalling.........
The media have not been helpful the majority of the time, peddling the lies and merely printing media releases, rather than actually looking into the subject matter.
There have been more horses removed from or killed in that park since the Labor Government took over and with an election next year, they are hell bent on finishing the job they started, because they know come 2027, they will be out.
Please know that none of us have given up or are throwing down the towel. It is an awful place trying to advocate for these horses and it does get to us from time to time. But we are determined more than ever, and we are closer to the truth.
All of your support is amazing, and it is appreciated so much! Every voice counts. π
