Applications close tonight for the Lowitja O’Donoghue Excellence in Leadership – Public Sector scholarship.

Three scholarships are available providing up to $50,000 each for a co-designed leadership pathway for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander public sector professionals.

In the spirit of Dr O’Donoghue’s pioneering approach, we encourage leadership pathways which support individual journeys, values, and aspirations, with the aim of high-impact and transformative change.

Nominations for the 2027 Lowitja Institute Awards are now open!

Our awards spotlight the outstanding contributions by researchers and leaders in the field of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing research.

The categories open for nominations are:

⭐Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Leadership Award

⭐Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Award

⭐Pat Anderson Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Researcher Award

⭐Tarrn-doon-nonin Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research Project Award

These awards showcase research that is culturally, ethically, and intellectually rigorous and for the benefit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

Applications for the inaugural Lowitja O’Donoghue Excellence in Leadership — Public Sector Scholarship are open now.

The Lowitja O’Donoghue Foundation thanks the Australian Government and the Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy, for endorsing and supporting the Foundation’s first Leadership program initiative.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander professionals with substantive public sector experience in Health, Aboriginal Affairs, Education or Human Services can apply for this national opportunity.

Honouring the late Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue and reflecting her career pathway, the scholarship prioritises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership development and professional impact over formal academic study, recognising that influence is forged through action, service, and lived experience.

Three scholarships are available nationally, applications from rural and remote areas are welcomed.

Are you an Indigenous researcher or working on an Indigenous health and wellbeing research project?

We welcome abstract submissions from individuals, communities, and organisations working locally and globally with, by, and for Indigenous peoples in the health and wellbeing sector, to present at our conference in June 2027.

Our conference theme, 'Time, Place, Spirit: Living our Legacy', is embedded throughout our program, and we invite critical discussions about issues that impact Indigenous peoples' health and wellbeing.

We encourage presentations led by Indigenous peoples that demonstrate Indigenous leadership, have a strengths-based approach, and contribute to the improvement of the health and wellbeing of Indigenous peoples.

International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples honours the rich cultures, histories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples around the world.

This year’s theme is Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Wellbeing.

Through our Major Grants Program, we’re proud to support projects that strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing, including Waminda’s Mob caring for Mob project.

Their project will establish pathways for Aboriginal women to pursue midwifery and support the expansion of Birthing on Country services. By identifying and addressing barriers to midwifery education, this initiative aims to strengthen the Aboriginal maternity workforce and improve culturally safe care for mothers and babies.
