Should you be replacing your toothbrush after being sick?
Yes - it's often a good idea to replace your toothbrush after certain illnesses, but it depends on what you were sick with.
Consider replacing your toothbrush if:
-You had a bacterial infection, such as 'Strep Throat'.
-You were sick for an extended period and your toothbrush became heavily contaminated with mucus or debris.
-The toothbrush is already worn out (generally recommend replacing it every 3β4 months).
For common viral illnesses:
If you had a cold, flu, or COVID-19, replacing the toothbrush is not strictly necessary. Viruses generally do not survive long on toothbrush bristles, and reinfecting yourself from your own toothbrush is considered unlikely because your immune system has already responded to the infection.
If you don't replace it:
You can reduce contamination by:
-Rinsing the toothbrush thoroughly after use.
-Allowing it to air-dry upright.
-Avoiding storage in a closed, damp container.
-Not sharing toothbrushes.
-A practical approach
It is recommend to be replacing your toothbrush once you're feeling better, especially after a significant illness.
