If you are a chronic over-achiever, you might want to sit down for this one. 👇

As an adult survivor of childhood trauma, you might pride yourself on being a high-achiever, a perfectionist, or the most reliable person in the room. But there is a distinct difference between healthy ambition and chronic overworking.

When you grew up in an environment where love and safety were conditional, and you only received praise when you were perfect, you can begin to think: “My worth is equal to my output.”

It’s an exhausting way to live, but you don’t have to keep burning yourself out to prove your value.

Raise your hand if you have ever felt personally victimised by your inner critic?! 🙋‍♀️

You know what I’m talking about right…

You could be doing something where you feel so good, happy and content… And then suddenly, that little thought whispers:

“This happiness isn’t going to last long…”

“If only people really knew what a s**t person you are.”

“Gawd, who do you think you are?!”

“You suck!”

Or any variation of these.

The inner-critic is a by-product of the trauma you went through. So no, nothing is wrong with you… What you’re struggling with is actually very common. And it can be worked through, as you begin to heal and recover from your past.

If this resonates, follow me for more content for adult survivors of childhood trauma.

I find the process of parts-work therapy to be so beautiful and healing. When we get to meet the younger parts of ourselves… The ones that worked so hard to keep us safe, trying to protect us and keep us strong… But when we begin to meet them with compassion and understanding, sometimes all they want to do is dance and be free. 🩵

Sometimes feeling joy is scary. We can become so conditioned to feeling panic, depression, and anxiety... That when we feel a glimmer of happiness, it completely freaks us out.

Especially if you’re an adult survivor of childhood trauma.

And this is why:

🍌 Chaos became your baseline: When your early life was unpredictable, your brain wired itself to survive constant stress. Feeling “good” feels unfamiliar, and to a trauma-trained brain, unfamiliar equals dangerous.

🍌 You are waiting for the catch: Your nervous system treats happiness like a trap. It assumes that letting your guard down to enjoy a good day means you won’t see the next crisis coming.

🍌 Peace feels deeply suspicious: When you are used to high-stakes survival, quiet and calm feel like the eerie silence right before a storm. Your brain literally manufactures anxiety just to give you a “problem” to solve.

🍌 Vulnerability feels unsafe: Genuinely leaning into joy requires dropping your armor. If dropping your armor got you hurt in the past, your inner critic will scream at you to put it back on.

So if you’re sitting there today completely stressed out simply because you had a good day—I get it. It’s exhausting. But you really are allowed to just enjoy the good moments without waiting for everything to fall apart.

Try to give yourself permission to lean into the happy stuff today, even if it’s just for five seconds. You don’t have to brace for impact anymore. 🤍

But do you know what I DO give a f* about?** 👇

As a trauma therapist, my “TOTGAF” meter is exceptionally high for everyday drama, outdated expectations, and people-pleasing.

But I have endless energy for you.
Your story.
Your healing.

In fact, I care immensely about:

🌱 Your right to be heard. Not managed, not silenced, not told you’re “too sensitive.” Just deeply, truly heard.

🌿 The validation of your past. What happened to you wasn’t fair, and it wasn’t your fault. Full stop.

🪴 Real, messy recovery. Healing isn’t a straight line, but moving toward your future with genuine optimism? Absolutely possible.

🍃 Reclaiming your nervous system. Learning what it actually feels like to feel safe in your own body, without waiting for the other shoe to drop.

🌱 Honouring your inner child. Giving that younger version of you the safety and protection they should have had all along.

I might be too old for the nonsense, but I will never be too old to care about your healing. Your past does not get the final say over your future. 🖤

Just kidding. 😂 No, but seriously, after giving it my all to my therapy clients (who I think are all amazing), I’m exhausted and make for a bad friend and wife. 😅🤪

Do any other therapists relate? Or those in another helping field?

If this sounds like you, I SEE you and I help adult survivors of childhood trauma just like you… everyday as a therapist. 👀

Hyper-independence can become a survival mechanism… And oh-boy, I know it makes you great. I know it gave you the strength and resilience to get to the place in life that you’re currently at.

I applaud you in this!

But just like any strength… It can have its downfall.

It can make you so strong and SO resilient, that you never rely on anyone… ever.

When this happens, we end up building a huge fortress around us, blocking out anybody that wants to get close to us.

It disrupts our ability to have beautiful healthy relationships with others.

And then the loneliness sweeps in.

You don’t need to do this on your own. If you’re in Australia, book in a free meet + greet with me, to see if I’m the right counsellor for you.
