๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ Dysautonomia is what happens when the autonomic nervous system โ€” the one running heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature without conscious input โ€” stops regulating properly.

๐Ÿ”— It's not a single condition. It's a description of a system malfunctioning, and it rarely arrives on its own. For many chronically unwell women it shows up alongside hypermobile EDS, mast cell activation, mould illness and CIRS, long-COVID, or autoimmune disease. Different labels, the same dysregulated system underneath.

๐Ÿฅผ Part of what makes it so difficult to get a handle on is that the symptoms scatter. Digestion to one specialist, heart rate to another, temperature and blood pressure swings to a third โ€” and nobody is looking at the network as a whole. Which is exactly where the pattern lives.

๐ŸŒณ Root-cause work takes time. In the meantime there are physical strategies that help stabilise a flare โ€” crossing and tensing the legs at the first sign of lightheadedness, getting horizontal with legs elevated rather than pushing through, increasing sodium and fluids ahead of known triggers.

๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Can't get a satisfying breath โ€” even though your oxygen reads completely normal?

๐Ÿ˜Ÿ This is air hunger. And it is one of the most dismissed symptoms in complex chronic illness โ€” because the numbers look fine, so it gets attributed to anxiety.

โŒ It isn't.

๐Ÿง  It's a brain-generated sensation driven by a specific set of overlapping physiological mechanisms โ€” POTS and dysautonomia driving hyperventilation and CO2 loss, histamine and mast cell activation narrowing the airways, mould illness priming mast cells and dysregulating the nervous system simultaneously.

โœ… The most evidence-supported starting point is breathing retraining โ€” nasal, slow, diaphragmatic breathing. In a study of 100 POTS patients, 97% reported reduced breathing symptoms after this approach.

๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ But retraining alone won't resolve it if the underlying drivers are still active such as mould. I know this from personal experience (see slide 3).

๐Ÿ”ฌA 2008 study looked at 40 women who developed lichen sclerosis young โ€” in their twenties, thirties and forties โ€” ie before menopause.

Every single person was taking the contraceptive pill ๐Ÿซจ

Among the 110 women without this autoimmune condition (the control group), only two thirds were taking it ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

๐Ÿฅ€ Lichen sclerosis is usually described as something that affects pre-pubescent girls, and women post-menopause. What those two groups have in common is very low testosterone โ€” and vulval skin relies on testosterone to stay strong and supple.

Reproductive-aged women are not the exception to that rule. They may be reaching it another way. This raises the question about all the years in betweenโ“

๐ŸชปThis is something most women don't announce. There's no form resignation letter about health, energy levels, pain, brain fog, or resilience.

Instead we hold it in, keep it together, sweep it under the carpet โ€“ until we can't ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿข This often happens gradually. The role turned down because the travel felt like too much; a once longed for promotion that wasn't applied for as it would be too demanding; hours reduced to something more manageable; then reduced again.

Work that once felt important, straightforward now requires longer recovery time ๐Ÿ˜ž

๐Ÿงฉ This pattern can show up often in women navigating fatigue, pain, brain fog, and the shifts of perimenopause and postmenopause.

๐Ÿซฉ Sleep often fragments, temperature regulation changes, cognitive processing slows, and stress tolerance narrows โ€” frequently across the same years when careers are expected to peak.

The cost is rarely counted, because each step looked reasonable at the time. This really is a public health issue that's gone ignored ๐Ÿ˜– In fact, it's exactly what happened to me, until I found functional health ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

โš–๏ธ Fluctuating oestrogen and progesterone, thyroid function, adrenal output, iron status, and blood sugar regulation all influence energy and cognition, and all can be assessed. Symptoms of this kind warrant investigation rather than accommodation. There might well be solutions even.

๐Ÿฅฆ The broccoli question comes up in nearly every Hashimoto's consultation, and it's one of the clearest examples of good research travelling a long way from where it started.

๐Ÿซ˜ The genuine goitrogens studied in human populations are cassava, millet and lima beans โ€” staple crops, eaten in volume, in places where iodine intake was already low. That combination matters. Thiocyanate competing with iodine is a real problem when iodine is scarce, and far less of one when it isn't.

๐Ÿฅฌ Cruciferous vegetables ended up carrying a reputation that belongs elsewhere. The compound in question is concentrated in turnip, swede and some mustard varieties. Broccoli, cauliflower, kale and cabbage contain very little, and cooking reduces it further.

๐Ÿ’ช Meanwhile those same vegetables are the richest dietary source of sulforaphane, which drives the body's own antioxidant production โ€” including the glutathione system the thyroid relies on to handle the hydrogen peroxide generated every time it makes hormone.

๐Ÿฆ  Restriction might have a place. A short, deliberate elimination with a reintroduction plan can provide useful information. Open-ended avoidance that quietly expands over years tends to cost more than it returns.

If the food list keeps getting shorter and the symptoms haven't shifted, the answer is probably somewhere else entirely ๐Ÿ’ซ

๐ŸŒฟ Lichen sclerosis (LS) is a condition that affects thousands of women โ€” and is still being missed, misdiagnosed, and undertreated.

๐Ÿฉบ Many women live with symptoms for years before receiving a correct diagnosis. Many more receive one โ€” and very little else beyond a prescription.

๐Ÿ’š LS deserves to be named. It deserves to be taken seriously. And it deserves an approach that goes beyond managing the surface symptom to understanding what is driving the immune dysregulation underneath.

โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน Because LS is autoimmune. And autoimmunity has drivers โ€” gut dysfunction, hormonal insufficiency, mould burden, systemic inflammation โ€” that are addressable when someone is actually looking for them.

โœจ If LS is part of the picture and the conversation has felt inadequate โ€” there is more to explore.

๐Ÿ˜ด Exhausted by basics. Reacting to more and more foods. A world that keeps getting smaller month by month.

๐Ÿงฉ This pattern has a name โ€” and it has an explanation that goes far beyond stress or sensitivity.

๐Ÿฅฑ The fatigue is a cellular energy crisis, not tiredness. The expanding food reactions are a map of what has happened in the gut and immune system, not a permanent state. The nervous system stuck in survival mode is a physiological reality, not a psychological one.

๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿป Recovery is possible. But it requires understanding what the body has actually been carrying โ€” and addressing that, rather than managing symptoms in isolation.

Health begins in the gut ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

๐Ÿ Because our gut microbiome plays a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, mood, and immune function, impacting overall health.

โš–๏ธ An imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to various health issues, including digestive disorders and even mental health conditions.
