It's the first of May, which means flu season is properly underway in Southeast Queensland. If you got your flu shot in April — great, you're ahead of it. If you've been meaning to and haven't quite gotten there yet, now really is the time. The vaccine takes about two weeks to reach full protection, so the sooner the better. A reminder: the Queensland Government flu vaccine program means most residents can get vaccinated for free. We're stocked up, our flu shot lounge is open, and walk-ins are welcome every day we're open. One of our regulars stopped in last week to grab a prescription. While she was waiting, she asked offhand whether we were doing flu shots. We told her yes — and that for most Queensland residents, the vaccine is completely free. She genuinely hadn't known. She'd been putting it off assuming there'd be a cost, and had just never quite gotten around to asking. She had her flu shot ten minutes later. Walked out protected for the season. We don't share this to make anyone feel silly for not knowing. Most people don't know — it's not exactly front-page news. But it is genuinely one of the better public health things Queensland does, and we think more people in our community should be taking it up. If you've been putting off your flu shot for any reason — cost, time, hassle — come in and ask us. The answers are probably better than you think.
