While inflammation in a healthy body is a normal and effective response that facilitates healing, when the immune system overreaches and begins attacking healthy body tissues, we’re met with inflammation in otherwise healthy areas of the body. Thankfully, following an anti-inflammatory diet by eating more anti-inflammatory foods can help.

What are anti-inflammatory foods? Anti-inflammatory foods are whole, nutrient-dense foods that help the body manage normal immune responses and oxidative stress.

The best anti-inflammatory foods are rich in antioxidants, polyphenols, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Common examples include leafy greens, berries, fatty fish, olive oil, nuts, seeds, turmeric, ginger, tomatoes, cherries, green tea, legumes and whole grains.

Discover the best anti-inflammatory foods, including a top 20 anti-inflammatory foods list, arthritis-friendly options, diet tips, foods to avoid and meal ideas.

Within a so-called “balanced diet” you’ll find macronutrients and micronutrients, both of which are essential nutrients we must get from food sources because our bodies cannot make them on their own. The three main macronutrients are fats, carbohydrates and protein, while micronutrients include vital vitamins and minerals in food.

Minerals in food are inorganic micronutrients that come from soil and water and enter the diet through plants, animals and drinking water. The body uses minerals to build bones and teeth, make enzymes and hormones, support nerve signals, regulate fluid balance, move oxygen through the blood, support thyroid function, and help muscles, including the heart, contract normally.

The human body requires 13 different types of minerals to maintain overall health. Find out which ones, their benefits and food sources.

What is L-theanine, and what is it used for? L-theanine (also called theanine or sometimes r-glutamylethylamide) is an amino acid that impacts nerve impulses in the brain and the release of neurotransmitters, including GABA.

It is known as natural anxiolytic because it can have a calming, sedative effect on the body and mind without making you feel drowsy, which is why it’s often used to help reduce anxiety, hyperactivity and sleep-related problems.

Most people don’t acquire a lot of theanine from their diets since it’s not available in many commonly eaten foods. It’s a unique amino acid because it’s not used to form proteins, unlike many other amino acids (such as l-carnitine, leucine, lysine, methionine or tryptophan), and is not used to make enzymes.

This amino acid is calming and centering, and it can help protect the heart and brain, plus help to regulate blood pressure and reduce symptoms of schizophrenia.

While many people are familiar with protein sources such as whey, collagen and soy, few have heard of rubisco, despite the fact that it’s considered the most abundant protein on the planet.

The rubisco enzyme plays a critical role in photosynthesis, helping plants capture carbon dioxide and convert sunlight into usable energy. Without this enzyme, plant life, and ultimately human life, would not exist as we know it.

At the center of nearly every terrestrial food chain is a remarkable biological process that allows plants to transform sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into energy-rich compounds. This process not only fuels plant growth, but also helps regulate Earth’s atmosphere, supports global agriculture, and provides the foundation for human and animal nutrition.

Discover what rubisco is, where it's found, how the rubisco enzyme works, potential health benefits, food sources, uses, side effects and why it is emerging as a sustainable plant protein.
