We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of our PhD candidate Han Trinh, who is investigating the use of artificial intelligence in inherited retinal diseases 👁️💻🧬 Supervised by Professor Ajmal Mian, Assoc Professor Khyber Alam, Dr Jason Charng, Assoc Professor Fred Cheng, and Dr Zahra Tajbakhsh, Han’s research includes interdisciplinary collaboration to address complex vision disorders.
Han has been awarded First Prize at Falling Walls, a prestigious global platform that brings together leaders across science, business, and society to identify and “break the next walls” in knowledge and innovation. 🏆Inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall, this international forum celebrates ideas that challenge barriers, advance scientific discovery, and create meaningful societal impact.

In recognition of this achievement, Han will represent our research team at the Falling Walls Global Finale in Berlin, Germany in November 2026, joining the world’s most promising innovators to showcase research that has the potential to reshape the future of science and human health. Congratulations, Han & team 📚🥳

UWA staff & final year OD students went to Girrawheen Senior High School to deliver eye health screenings for students 👓🧑‍🏫📚

It was a pleasure speaking with Federal Education Minister Jason Clare, WA Minister for Education Sabine Winton MLA, and local member Dr Anne Aly MP, and highlighting the impact of the Connected Community School initiative and the importance of integrating health and education to support student wellbeing and learning outcomes. On behalf of UWA, we are very excited to contribute to the program 📖

Good vision is fundamental to learning, ~80% of what people learn is through vision, and uncorrected vision problems are strongly associated with poorer literacy, reduced classroom engagement, and lower educational outcomes✏️

Proud to see our students contributing to accessible, culturally appropriate eye care in the community, making a real difference where it matters most ❤️

We were privileged to host Professor Mubarak Shah, Trustee Chair Professor at the University of Central Florida and a global leader in computer vision and artificial intelligence, as a Visiting Scholar at UWA 💡💻

During his visit, Professor Shah delivered an outstanding lecture on cutting-edge advances in diffusion-based AI models, and led a highly engaging masterclass on AI in medicine for our PhD students and early career researchers. His insights into improving robustness, reliability, and trustworthiness of generative AI sparked rich discussion across disciplines.
We sincerely thank the UWA Institute of Advanced Studies for supporting this visit through its Visiting Fellowship program, which continues to create invaluable opportunities for intellectual exchange and global collaboration. Our appreciation also goes to our very own Professor Ajmal Mian for his mentorship of our PhD students and early career researchers.

Bringing together diverse expertise enables us to challenge ideas, broaden perspectives, and collectively develop solutions that better serve science, practice, and society.
A truly inspiring engagement, thank you, Professor Shah, for your generosity with time & knowledge sharing, leadership, and continued collaboration🙏❤️
