Do Vitamin C tablets actually prevent colds?

It’s something millions of Australians reach for every winter — but the research might not say quite what you expect.

news.com.au recently asked us to weigh in on Vitamin C supplements, including a question most people probably never think to ask:

👉 How is the Vitamin C in your supplement actually made?

We spoke about the difference between isolated Vitamin C and getting it from a wholefood source — and why we choose to freeze-dry whole Camu Camu berries.

If you take Vitamin C, this is worth a read: https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/australian-nutritionist-warns-vitamin-c-tablets-and-gummies-wont-prevent-most-winter-colds/news-story/cc633cdfc7313f1ebca1254c15a1f24d

An Australian nutritionist is urging families to rethink vitamin C tablets and gummies this winter, warning many shoppers would be surprised by how they’re made and that they won’t prevent the common cold.

It’s not only what you eat. The way you approach, sequence and finish a meal can also influence digestive and metabolic physiology.

Digestion begins before the first bite through cephalic-phase responses triggered by the sight, smell, taste and anticipation of food. Oral processing, nutrient sequence and post-meal movement can then influence satiation, gastric function and the postprandial glucose response.

This is not about creating rigid food rules. It is about understanding the physiology and using it flexibly, according to individual tolerance, gastrointestinal function and metabolic needs.

The evidence is also not equal across every strategy. Research is strongest for food sequencing and light post-meal movement, while the clinical effects of bitter foods remain emerging and dose-dependent.

Save this as a reference for building more intentional, physiology-informed meals.

Calcium is often talked about purely in the context of bones, but its role in the body goes much further.

It is involved in bone mineralisation, muscle contraction, nerve signalling and normal cellular function, which means getting enough calcium consistently matters across the lifespan.

Vitamin D is also part of the picture, helping support the absorption and utilisation of calcium, while magnesium complements both through its role in healthy bones and normal muscle function.

That’s why our new Calcium + Vitamin D formula combines whole-food calcium from red marine algae, naturally occurring magnesium and Vitamin D₂ from UV-exposed shiitake mushroom.

A daily 4-capsule serve provides 676 mg of calcium, around 68% of the RDI for adults with a 1,000 mg calcium RDI, plus 47 mg magnesium and 8 µg Vitamin D₂.

Calcium is more than a bone mineral. It’s an essential part of how the body moves, signals and maintains structure.

15 simple habits to improve your health : Winter edition

Health doesn’t usually come from one miracle food, one supplement or one perfect workout. It’s built through the small choices we make every day.

Every habit in this Winter Challenge is supported by scientific research. Regular movement improves cardiovascular and metabolic health. Strength training helps maintain muscle and bone density. Eating more colourful vegetables and fibre supports your gut microbiome. Quality sleep is essential for immune function, hormone regulation and recovery. Time in nature, sunlight and meaningful social connection have all been shown to benefit both physical and mental wellbeing.

None of these habits are complicated. They don’t require expensive equipment or extreme routines. They’re simple because they’re designed to be sustainable.

Pick one, then another. By the end of 30 days, those small actions can add up to meaningful change.

Your brain is made of fat. The fats you eat matter.

People living with depression have been found to have around 22% lower blood levels of omega-3 fatty acidscompared with people without depression, highlighting a consistent association between omega-3 status and mental health.

Omega-3s, particularly EPA and DHA, are essential components of brain cell membranes. They help:
• Support communication between brain cells
• Regulate inflammation in the brain
• Influence serotonin and dopamine signalling
• Maintain healthy neuronal structure and function

While omega-3s are not a replacement for appropriate medical treatment, research suggests they may play an important role in supporting brain health, especially in people with low omega-3 status. Several meta-analyses have found that EPA-rich omega-3 formulations may help reduce depressive symptoms when used appropriately, particularly as an adjunct to standard care.

At Forest Super Foods, our Phyto Omega-3 is derived from sustainably grown microalgae, providing a clean, ocean-friendly source of EPA without fish.

Your brain never stops rebuilding itself. Give it the building blocks it needs.

Did you know turmeric on its own is poorly absorbed?

Curcumin, the main active compound in turmeric, has naturally low bioavailability. That means much of it passes through the digestive system before your body has a chance to absorb and use it.

One of the simplest ways to improve absorption is by adding black pepper.

Black pepper contains piperine, a natural compound that works by slowing the breakdown of curcumin in the gut and liver, while also increasing intestinal absorption. This allows more curcumin to enter the bloodstream and remain available for longer.

In a landmark human study, researchers found that adding 20 mg of piperine to 2 g of curcumin increased curcumin bioavailability by 2000% (around 20-fold) compared with curcumin alone.¹

That’s exactly why we’ve included organic black pepper in Forest Super Foods Turmeric+. We don’t just focus on what goes into our products. We also think about how well your body can actually use it.

Whole food ingredients. Thoughtfully combined. Nothing unnecessary.
