Today, as modern society struggles with escalating greenhouse gas levels, scientists are turning back to this ancient plant to pioneer natural carbon sequestration methods. Capable of doubling its biomass in just days, Azolla is a biological powerhouse that naturally locks away carbon at a rapid pace.

Recent research funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation is exploring how to harness this fern's unique growth rate and nitrogen-fixing abilities to offset current emissions.
