💧World Continence Week 🚻

If you cross your legs when you sneeze, map out toilets before leaving the house, wear a pad “just in case”, or avoid certain types of exercise because of bladder leaks…this one’s for you.

Bladder leakage is very common, but it’s not something you have to put up with because you’ve had a baby, are getting older, or because “all the women in your family have it.”

Some signs your bladder might be asking for help:
• Leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise
• Rushing to the toilet and struggling to hold on
• Going to the toilet “just in case” all the time
• Waking multiple times overnight to wee
• Avoiding activities because you’re worried about leaking

The good news? These symptoms are often treatable, and you don’t need to suffer in silence.

Share this with your mum, sister, friend, work wife, gym buddy or anyone who needs the reminder that leaking is common - but it’s not normal ❤️

Hovering over the toilet might feel cleaner…but your bladder and pelvic floor won’t thank you for it!

To empty your bladder completely, the pelvic floor needs to relax completely.

This is really hard to do when you are hovering.

It is so much easier when we sit down!

Save this or sent it to someone who is a hover-er!

Straining on the toilet might feel normal to you…but it can be a big contributor to pelvic floor issues!

Your pelvic floor needs to RELAX and LENGTHEN to empty your re**um properly.

Sometimes simple strategies can make a big difference to something you do every day.

Save this or send it to someone who spends too long on the toilet 👀

Pelvic floor symptoms don’t often exist in isolation.

What’s happening at your pelvis, hips, breathing pattern and core all play a role in how your pelvic floor functions.

That’s why your assessment might not always look like what you expect. We look at how your body moves, loads and coordinates as a whole - not just one muscle group.

Because real, lasting change comes from treating the whole person, not just the pelvic floor.

If something doesn’t feel quite right, your body might be trying to tell you something - and we’re here to help you listen.

Prolapse is graded based on how far the pelvic organ (bladder, uterus or re**um) descends relative to the va**nal opening:

Stage 1️⃣ – Mild descent, stays well inside the va**na
Stage 2️⃣ – Within 1cm inside and 1cm outside the va**nal opening
Stage 3️⃣ – Extends more than 1cm beyond the va**nal opening
Stage 4️⃣ – Fully outside the va**na

Here’s the part many people aren’t told 👇

📌 Stage does NOT equal symptom severity.
📌 We treat symptoms + function - not just the number.

I’ve seen Stage 2 patients with no symptoms. And Stage 1 patients who have really bothersome symptoms.

Context matters. Individual assessment matters.

✨ “What actually happens in a pelvic floor appointment?”

So many women delay booking because they’re unsure what to expect.

At Shire Women’s Physio, your appointment always starts with a conversation. We discuss your symptoms and concerns, goals, birth history, bladder and bowel habits, training load and lifestyle.

We use pelvic models like this to explain what might be happening anatomically, and demonstrate what is involved in the assessment of your pelvic floor and va**nal walls.

Internal assessments (where we insert 1 or 2 fingers va**nally) are never rushed and are only performed with your consent. They help us assess muscle strength, coordination, tone and support. This allows us to diagnose what is causing your symptoms and develop an effective treatment plan.

You deserve to feel informed, comfortable and empowered, not embarrassed.
