Meet Christy, one of the compassionate and dedicated faces behind Elder Folks. đź‘‹

Christy joined us in September, bringing with her a strong background in the NDIS sector as a Support Coordinator. Throughout her career, she has built a reputation for genuine advocacy, compassion, and always going above and beyond to support vulnerable people through some of life’s most challenging circumstances.

Since joining the team, Christy has helped more than 100 seniors experiencing homelessness find safe, secure, forever homes. Her incredible work has not only provided housing, but restored dignity, stability, independence and hope to older Australians who needed support the most.

The overwhelmingly positive feedback from both clients and peers speaks volumes about the impact she continues to make every single day. Her dedication, warmth, and unwavering commitment to helping others are at the heart of everything she does, and we are incredibly proud to have her as part of the Elder Folks team.

Hoarding and squalor are often misunderstood.

What we see on the surface is rarely the full story. Behind it, there can be trauma, grief, mental health challenges, or cognitive decline, experiences that can’t be addressed with a one-off clean or quick fix.
That’s why our approach is trauma-informed.

We take the time to understand each person’s situation, move at their pace, and involve them in every decision. There’s no judgement or pressure, just consistent, respectful support focused on rebuilding safety and stability over time.

If you know someone needing this kind of support, get in touch with our team. You can learn more about this service on our website.

It doesn’t always look how people expect.

It might be an older person moving between spare rooms, trying not to outstay their welcome. Sleeping in their car or maybe staying in short-term accommodation with no clear next step.

Often, it’s the result of things outside their control, slowly pushing someone out of stability.

And without the right support, these situations can quickly impact health, safety and wellbeing.

That’s why we focus on early intervention, finding stable housing, and staying alongside people to help them rebuild a sense of security and home.

This is the story of Elder Folks 🧡

Mary Baumann founded Elder Folks (formerly Aged Care Placement Services) after more than 20 years supporting older Australians and their families through aged care and housing systems.

After seeing how confusing and overwhelming the system could be, and how often people were left without clear guidance, she set out to create something different: support that is clear, compassionate, and centred around each person’s needs, values and choices.

As community needs evolved, so did the organisation — expanding beyond residential care into in-home support, housing pathways, and complex care navigation for those facing some of life’s toughest challenges.

Today, as Elder Folks, that vision remains the same: to ensure every older person feels seen, heard and supported to live with safety, dignity and connection.

From 1 October 2026, personal care under Support at Home will be fully funded for eligible participants: a meaningful change for older Australians and the people supporting them.

Personal care isn’t an “extra.” It’s essential to health, dignity and everyday wellbeing. Removing out-of-pocket costs means people can access support like showering, dressing and continence care without added financial pressure.

While nothing changes just yet, this is an important step towards more accessible, equitable care at home.

If you’re unsure what these changes might mean for you or someone you support, we’re here to help you understand what’s next.

Today on ANZAC Day, we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for our country and our freedom.

From World War I to Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Timor, their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We also reflect on the many veterans we’ve had the privilege to know and support — remembering them not just for their service, but for who they were.

A special mention to our former teammate, Jed Flanagan, now serving in the Australian Air Force. We are incredibly proud of you.

Lest we forget.

Our Occupational Therapy program provides in-home assessments that help identify practical changes to improve safety and independence.

From recommending home modifications to assistive equipment, our team works closely with clients and housing providers to ensure the right supports are put in place, helping people live safely and comfortably at home for longer.

If you know someone who’d need this type of support, get in touch or submit a referral through our website.

Behind every older person we support is a wider story of family, culture, history and lived experience.

No two situations are the same. Some families are navigating complex care decisions for the first time. Others are balancing different cultural expectations, languages or ways of caring for elders. What they all have in common is trying to do what feels right for someone they love.

That’s why our work is never just about services or systems. We take the time to understand the whole picture: the family dynamics, cultural background, personal history and what matters most to everyone involved.

By listening first and meeting people where they are, we’re able to support decisions that feel respectful, culturally safe and right for the person and their family.
