An aged care assessment is one of the most important steps in accessing government-funded aged care services (like Support at Home). But it's also one of the most misunderstood.

Many people worry they'll be tested or judged. In reality, it's simply a conversation to better understand your needs and the support that may be right for you.

You don't have to wait until things reach crisis point.

One of the biggest misconceptions about aged care is that you should only seek help when managing at home is no longer possible.
In reality, planning earlier gives you more time to understand your options, make informed decisions and access the support that's right for you.

If you or someone you love is starting to find everyday life a little harder, it might be time to start the conversation.

If you're unsure where to begin, we're here to help you understand your options and guide you through every step of the process.

The decision to downsize is rarely easy. But sometimes the signs are there. It could be the mounting upkeep, the rooms that sit empty or spaces that are hard to manage.

Noticing these things means it might be time to have a conversation about downsizing. And with the right support, downsizing can be the beginning of a chapter that feels lighter, safer, and more fulfilling.

We're here to help you think it through. Head to our website to find out more about our Moving with Meaning downsizing support.

To make this process a little easier is why Elder Folks exists. We help older Australians and their families cut through the complexity: understanding what support is available, how to access it, and how to make sure nothing falls through the cracks while you wait.

Aged care homes carry a lot of assumptions, and some of them stop families from having conversations that could genuinely improve someone's quality of life, or delay important decisions.

The reality is that residential aged care looks very different to what many people imagine. Knowing the facts and what to expect before you start the process will help you feel prepared and get the best outcome for someone you’re supporting.

Here are a few of the most common myths, and what's actually true.

Most people don't think about occupational therapy until something goes wrong. But an OT assessment is actually most valuable before things become difficult, and changes are often simpler than people expect.

Grab rails, a walk-in shower, better lighting, a lift chair or a smart home device can make an enormous difference to how safely and confidently someone moves through their own home. And beyond the physical changes, staying at home means staying connected to your community, your routines and the life you've built.

We've written a guide to how occupational therapy and home modifications can help older Australians stay at home for longer and what an assessment involves. Head to our website to read the full guide.
