What makes behaviour support "specialist"?

Specialist behaviour support is the NDIS term for support involving practitioners with specific expertise in understanding behaviours of concern, conducting assessments, and developing behaviour support plans, including the additional obligations that apply when any restrictive practices are involved.

In practice, it means the person working with your family has particular training in this field, follows the NDIS Commission's requirements, and approaches behaviour through evidence-based frameworks rather than guesswork.

When you refer a participant to an NDIS behaviour support provider, you are trusting someone with a family that’s often already stretched. We take that seriously.

What you can expect from Next Step Professional Therapy: prompt communication about capacity and timeframes, practitioners matched thoughtfully to participants, behaviour support plans delivered within agreed timelines, and honest updates throughout, including when things need adjusting.

Behaviour support is only half of what we do.

Next Step Professional Therapy also provides NDIS counselling and psychotherapy, delivered in-home for adults, children and families across the Sunshine Coast and Noosa.

Counselling can help participants build self-knowledge, work through difficult experiences, and develop emotional skills at their own pace. It can stand alone, complement psychological supports, or provide meaningful help during the wait for psychology services, which we know can stretch for months in our region.

Depending on your plan, counselling may be funded under categories such as Improved Daily Living or Improved Relationships. We can help you understand what your plan allows.

Why do we deliver our services in your home rather than a clinic?

Because context matters. NDIS supported therapy services work best when they happen where life happens. A practitioner who sees the actual kitchen at the real dinner time learns more in one visit than a clinic could reveal in five.

Home delivery also removes real barriers: travel, waiting rooms, unfamiliar environments that can be difficult for some participants. Comfort and privacy are part of the service, and for many of the people we support, they are the difference between engaging and enduring.

The person we support sets the direction, their preferences shape how sessions run, and their goals define what success looks like. When we write a behaviour support plan, the person and their family see it, understand it and have a real say in it, because a plan that does not fit the person tends to stay in the drawer.

Person-centred NDIS support also means respecting communication in all its forms, working at the person's pace, and treating the family home like the privilege it is to be invited into.
