“Engage your core” sounds simple… but the same setup doesn’t work for every body.
Our natural spinal curvatures influence how our body organises itself on the mat/carriage. For some people, lying in neutral without extra spinal support can make it harder to find a rib-pelvis connection for an effective core engagement.
Sometimes, adding a simple prop changes everything.
In this example, adding a block behind head allows to find:
→ Better rib–pelvis alignment
→ Better and deeper abdominal engagement
→ More movement control
→ More efficient movement
🚫 The prop isn’t there to make the exercise “easier”.
✅ It’s there to help the body find a position where it can function more efficiently.
Because Functional Pilates isn’t about forcing every body into the same position, it’s about understanding the body in front of us and knowing when to adapt.
Want to learn more than just the exercises, and understand the WHY behind your teaching?
If you are interested in becoming the kind of instructor who can confidently support the bodies in front of them, our next teacher training intake is coming up.
