This morning, we recognised the achievements of our participants and other people with disability, while recognising the positive impact people with a disability have on the greater community in honour of International Day of People with Disability - Australia.
The theme for the International Day of People with Disability in 2023 is βUnited in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities.β Each yearβs theme typically focuses on specific aspects of disability rights and inclusion.
The International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) holds profound significance for several reasons:
πPromoting Inclusivity: IDPD serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of creating an inclusive society where people with disabilities are valued and included in all aspects of life. It encourages the removal of physical, social, and attitudinal barriers.
πRaising Awareness: The day raises awareness about the rights, challenges, and contributions of people with disabilities. It helps dispel stereotypes and misconceptions, fostering empathy and understanding.
πAdvocating for Rights: IDPD advocates for the full and equal participation of people with disabilities in society, emphasizing their right to dignity, respect, and equal opportunities. It supports the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
πCelebrating Achievements: IDPD celebrates the achievements and accomplishments of individuals with disabilities in various fields, including education, employment, sports, and the arts. It highlights their potential and resilience.
πGlobal Solidarity: The day promotes global solidarity and cooperation in addressing disability-related challenges. It encourages governments, organizations, and communities to work together to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
πPolicy Development: IDPD serves as a platform for the development and implementation of disability-friendly policies and practices. It encourages governments to adopt inclusive policies and laws that protect the rights of individuals with disabilities.
πEmpowerment: It empowers people with disabilities by giving them a platform to share their experiences and aspirations. It encourages self-advocacy and self-determination.
πEducation: IDPD is an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of accessibility and accommodation, as well as the benefits of a diverse and inclusive society.
