Ngalwagadj Nivea went for a walk this morning along the community dirt road and found two an-djardbirru (white bush apples), which she shared with her Doi Doi, great grandmother Jessie.

Meanwhile, Ngalbangardi Jessie and her son Nagangila Ben (Me!) foraged in the fridge to see what we could cook up for lunch to share with our community.

Yesterday, Ngalgangila Mandy had defrosted a minced meat packet that was in the frigde, so Mum and I chopped up some veggies donated by plus a couple of packets of chicken noodles trying to use up whatever we had in the cupboard. Then we put the rice.

The mince packet expired in August, so two months ago. But it still tasted delicious, wasnโ€™t off, and didnโ€™t go to waste.

This is community-style cooking making do with what we got to use our imagination in stretching the food to help nourish family in our community.

9 people enjoyed this lubly feed and with leftovers put away in the fridge for later for dinner and/or tomorrow breakfast.

Mum Jessie went foraging with family on the floodplains yesterday for almangayi (fresh water long neck turtle).

They found one, cooked it and shared it amongst the paperbark trees watching the sunset over the wetlands.

Still too much water to find turtles in the drying mud.

But plenty of kurruk (fresh water mussels) was collected and mum brang some home to cook up in the oven with a simple recipe just a bit of garlic butter and breadcrumbs.

Earlier Mum precooked the kurruk and drank the juice, which sheโ€™d been craving and was completely satisfied with her kurruk juice.

When kurruk was cooked and ready we shared the delicious kurruk and added some lubly spice from Mumโ€™s chillie jar!

Nothing beats Mumโ€™s cooking!

Mum, sister and I scumped it! But left some for other family to try.

Who else loves community style dishes made with love? ๐Ÿ’š
