The NT deserves world‑class science.

Genomic science helps us understand how infections shift with the climate and how to protect our communities.

We want to expand our capacity with the MiSeq i100 Plus, a next‑generation sequencer that will transform how we study, track, and prevent disease across the Territory.
If you'd like to be part of bringing this world‑class genomic technology to the NT, please consider making a donation today: www.menzies.edu.au/page/Support_Us/Donate/ -form

Menzies Timor-Leste supported the delivery of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training at HNGV for doctors and nurses working in emergency and critical care settings. Delivered in partnership with the PEARLS Program (POCUS in Emergency and Acute Care in Resource-Limited Settings), the training focused on the use of bedside ultrasound to support the rapid assessment and management of critically ill patients.

Bringing together healthcare professionals from multiple specialties the program combined interactive learning, supervised scanning, mentorship and hands-on practice to strengthen participants' ability to use ultrasound in acute care settings.[SB1.1]Supported by the Regional Emergency and Critical Care Systems Strengthening Initaiative (RECSI), this reflects the continued commitment of Menzies Timor-Leste and RECSI consortium partners to strengthening the capacity of the emergency and critical care workforce and improving the quality of healthcare services in Timor-Leste.

RECSI is supported by the Australian Government’s Partnerships for a Healthy Region initiative.

What do hurricanes, military equipment, aromatherapy oil and a pet raccoon have in common?

All have been linked with cases of melioidosis (caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei), as part of tracking the global spread of the disease in a new review led by Menzies.

As more cases reveal the disease’s rapidly expanding global footprint, this research highlights the strong need to take a public health approach to support prevention and timely diagnosis and treatment of melioidosis.

Menzies warmly congratulates Dr Pat Turner on her appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours.

An Arrernte and Gurdanji woman, Pat has devoted her life to advancing the rights, health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through her exceptional leadership, advocacy and commitment to self-determination, she has helped shape policies and partnerships that continue to make a lasting difference to communities across Australia.
Pat's tireless work, integrity and vision have inspired many across the health, research and community sectors. This honour is a fitting recognition of her lifelong contribution and the profound impact she has had on improving the lives of First Nations peoples.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Pat on this well-deserved achievement.

NACCHO proudly congratulates Pat Turner AO, a proud Arrernte and Gurdanji woman, on being appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the Indigenous community.

This honour recognises a lifetime of service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, through national policy reform, community-controlled health, Closing the Gap, governance, leadership and the pursuit of justice for our people.

For more than five decades, Pat has helped shape the national agenda. She has challenged governments, strengthened institutions, backed communities and insisted that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must lead the decisions that affect our lives, our health and our futures.

During her decade as NACCHO CEO, Pat strengthened the national voice of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and helped position ACCHOs where they belong: at the centre of health reform, trusted by community and led by community.

In Pat’s own words:
“The quiet day-to-day work done in our communities shows the broader Australian community what happens when Aboriginal health is in Aboriginal hands.”

That belief has carried her work and strengthened ours.

Pat’s AO is a powerful recognition of her leadership and of the community-controlled sector she has spent her life championing. Her legacy lives in stronger ACCHOs, stronger national advocacy, stronger partnerships and a clearer path for future Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders to walk in strength.

Thank you, Pat, for your extraordinary service, your courage, your clarity and your lifelong commitment to our people.

A deeply deserved honour. 🖤💛❤️

Melioidosis is a serious wet season health risk.

Researchers have identified new Asian strains of Melioidosis that are now present in northern Australia. Genomic sequencing is the key to understanding how they arrived, and how they’re spreading.

You can help support this vital research. Menzies is fundraising to bring the MiSeq i100 Plus sequencing platform to the Territory, giving local researchers the tools they need to respond faster and build a stronger understanding of emerging health risks.

PhD OPPORTUNITY | Do you have a background in molecular biology/bioinformatics and a passion for infectious disease research?

We have an exciting PhD opportunity available as part of our team in our Global and Tropical Health Division.

This project will characterise the hidden splenic burden of malaria in Africa and investigate how malaria parasites persist within the spleen and contribute to ongoing infection. In collaboration with IDRC Uganda and the Burnet Institute, you will quantify splenic parasite biomass, explore drug tolerance and the genetic diversity of hidden splenic reservoirs, and dissect transcriptomic profiles of parasite populations in the spleen and circulating blood.
