Let's talk SIBO!!

SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. It happens when there are too many bacteria or the wrong mix of bacteria in the small intestine. Normally, most gut bacteria live farther down in the large intestine.

When bacteria overgrow in the small intestine, they can ferment carbohydrates before your body has properly absorbed them. This can produce excess hydrogen or, when methane-producing organisms are involved, methane. The result can be bloating, pressure, excessive gas, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea and/or constipation just to name a few.

Methane in particular is associated with slower intestinal transit and constipation; technically, methane-dominant cases are now often called intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO) rather than SIBO.

SIBO can also interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption. In more significant cases, it may contribute to deficiencies such as vitamin B12 and fat-soluble vitamins, unintended weight loss or fatty stools.

It can become a frustrating cycle too: impaired intestinal motility can predispose someone to overgrowth, while the resulting gas and digestive symptoms make the gut feel even more unsettled.

💭 A few important points: bloating alone doesn't mean SIBO, and SIBO isn't simply caused by eating sugar or having "bad bacteria."

Conditions or medications that alter gut motility or anatomy can increase the risk. Diagnosis is commonly investigated with hydrogen/methane breath testing, although testing has limitations and symptoms can overlap with IBS, constipation and other digestive conditions.

SIBO has become more and more common over the years and being common certainly doesn't mean it's normal, not in the slightest.

Colonics can assist with opening the detox pathways to help things move along faster whilst you work with a practitioner or are on antibiotics (we see this in the clinic often with clients) 💩✨️

It might seem embarrassing (and a little funny to some😂), but when your gas or p**p regularly smells like rotten eggs, your gut may be trying to tell you something.

That rotten-egg smell is often linked to sulphur-containing gases, particularly hydrogen sulphide, produced as gut bacteria break down certain foods.

And while what you eat can absolutely play a role, diet isn’t always the whole story.

If your bowels aren’t emptying regularly and your gut transit is slow, there’s more time for fermentation and bacterial activity which can mean more gas, bloating and some seriously offensive smells 💨

Persistent sulphur-smelling gas can sometimes be associated with things like:

🥚 Sulphur-rich foods
🐌 Slow gut transit / constipation
🦠 Changes in the gut microbiome
💨 Increased fermentation
⚠️ Certain gut infections or digestive conditions

So before you just blame last night’s eggs;

Pay attention to how often you’re actually emptying your bowels.

Your 💩 can tell you A LOT about what’s happening inside your digestive system.

And if the smell is persistent or comes with ongoing diarrhoea, pain, fever, blood in the stool or unexplained weight loss, it’s worth assessing.

Sometimes it’s just a fart. Sometimes it’s a clue. 👀

Not all heroes wear capes, some slide into the conversation to talk about your bowel habits. 😂💩

If bloating, constipation or sluggish digestion have become your 'normal', especially with all the dry season antics it might be time to book in your colonic to get things moving and having you feel at your best. 🤎

Somewhere along the way, convenience became normal.

Drive through meals. Takeaway several nights a week. Ultra-processed snacks. Eating in the car. Rushing meals between appointments.

We've become a society that spends less time preparing real food and more time relying on foods designed to last on a shelf, not nourish our bodies.

While no single meal will make or break your health, when fast food and highly processed foods become the foundation of our diet, our bodies can start to struggle.

You might notice:
✨ Constant bloating
✨ Low energy
✨ Constipation or irregular bowel movements
✨ Brain fog
✨ Weight gain
✨ Increased inflammation
✨ Poor gut health

Our grandparents didn't have perfect diets, but many families still sat around the table eating home cooked meals made from simple ingredients.
Cooking at home gives you control over what goes into your body; more whole foods, better quality fats, fewer additives, and more fibre to support a healthy gut.

Your gut wasn't designed to thrive on convenience foods every day.
It thrives on real food. It thrives on slowing down. It thrives on nourishment.

This week, challenge yourself to cook just one extra meal at home.
Your gut and the rest of your body will thank you.

Your health doesn't change overnight. It changes with the choices you make every single day 🤎
