Diabetes and other metabolic conditions are increasingly common, yet in many cases they are closely linked to lifestyle choices. Factors such as poor nutrition, physical inactivity, high stress, and excess weight contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and related complications. The positive news is that these conditions are often preventable—and in some instances, even reversible—through targeted behaviour changes. Regular physical activity, such as aerobic exercise, improves cardiovascular fitness and helps lower blood sugar, while resistance training builds muscle mass, enhancing insulin sensitivity. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can be especially effective in reducing abdominal fat and improving metabolic health. Combined with balanced nutrition, these approaches offer powerful tools for prevention and management.

Hi everyone! A big warm welcome to our newest staff member, Anabela. Anabela is our Exercise Physiologist, experienced in all facets of exercise and rehabilitation. In fact, she is a doctor of ex phys having completed a PhD. You can now join our gym and allied health hub as a member to get discounts for all our services. Anabela will be gradually taking over the class structure in the clinic a well as personal training and specialist rehabilitation such as cardiac rehab and late stage post-surgical rehab.

CORE STABILITY: The REAL story.

I’m sure by now, we have all heard the “core stability” phrase. The fact is that the fitness industry has hijacked this term in order to further their own agenda.

Research at UQ by a certain physio in the early 1990’s changed the world’s perception of back pain forever. However, the specificity has been largely ignored in order for the fitness industry to promote their own agenda. Can your trainer explain specifically what true core stability is about?

It’s time you understood.

TRUE core stability is about 2 specific muscles. They are Transversus Abdominus and Multifidus. Dr Paul Hodges conducted some amazing research with electrode needles into all 4 abdominal muscles with amazingly statistically significant results. If your trainer has not mentioned these muscles as part of your rehab training, you are probably being mislead.

Back pain is not necessarily about “slipped discs” or other fanciful terms we have endured over the years. There is no such thing as a “Slipped Disc”. Any understanding of anatomy makes this term cringeworthy.

We, as physios, are now so more in tune with the relevant causes of back pain and how to deal with them.
