You’re eating enough protein… but are you absorbing it? 👀
You’re hitting your protein goals, prioritising protein at every meal and doing all the right things.
But here’s something we don’t talk about enough…
Eating enough protein and absorbing it effectively are two different things.
I often see clients whose blood results show low protein markers, despite eating what appears to be an adequate amount of protein.
One factor I commonly consider is low stomach acid, which can affect protein digestion. But it’s only one piece of the puzzle — there can be several reasons why protein levels are low.
Other signs of low stomach acid are:
• Bloating & Gas
• Frequent Burping
• Reflux/Indigestion
• Nausea (especially after eating)
• Undigested Food in Stool
• Nutritional Deficiencies (low iron, B12)
• SIBO
If you experience any of these you may have low stomach acid and therefore be at risk of protein deficiency too.
We obsess over hitting our macros before getting the basics right. And it all starts in the gut.
