Well Hellooooo Perth!

I’ve landed in the big smoke and very excited to be joining the incredibly talented and dedicated team at Perth Health and Fertility.

5 weeks in clinic for 2024 remaining. Oof! I know what that means.
The frequency that I reach for herbs to support patients with stress and anxiety are guaranteed to rise.

I often reflect on the two drivers of stress. Worrying and rushing.
While worry is a hard one to control, some good mindfulness practices can certainly help. If you haven’t already tried it, the Smiling Mind app is a super helpful little tool you can use during the day, for a pause, a breath, a moment to yourself or circuit breaker to help bring down the cortisol a notch or two.
Rushing, certainly one we can control. Allow enough time to get from one place to another. Try to avoid squeezing that “extra thing” into the day, that will inevitably add a time stress.
I realise many of these things are easier said than done, but worth a try for a more enjoyable, less frazzled end to the year. 🧘

Not quite pooing like a champion? 💩

Here are my go to suggestions to bring some regularity, ease, sense of completion and satisfaction back to your bathroom visits.

🚽 Make time to poo. Avoiding the urge sends the message to your bowels that you’re not interested in what it’s got to say. Do this often enough, it will eventually stop telling you!
Allowing time to poo, allows you to relax. When you relax, your bowels relax. In most cases, there you have it!

💦 It might feel like old news but often the easiest solution is to Drink. More. Water.
Adults aim for 2-3L per day. This includes herbal tea which makes it easier to achieve during winter.

🏃‍♀️ Move. When you move, your bowels move. Stagnant bowels are often the result of a stagnant body - read: not enough exercise.

💩 Fibre. We need around 30g of fibre per day in a variety of colours and forms. Fibre helps provide bulk to the stools which stimulate the stretch receptors and urge to poo.
Our gut microbiome, which also influences our bowel movements, need to eat! Their food is fibre.
Think of them as your workers, your team of staff. They carry out some of the most important jobs in your body - producing neurotransmitters, vitamins, immune defence, regulating inflammation, supporting mood and digestive function. Well-fed workers will always perform better than those feeling starved. Just sayin’.

🥝 Fruit. It’s designed in to move quickly through the digestive system and be pooped out in a timely manner. This way, from an evolutionary perspective, we could then transfer seeds to new locations to regerminate. While we’re no longer simply dumping new fruit trees around the hood, fruit still acts to support bowel transit time. Simply increasing your fruit intake (3-5 serves /day), can effectively unblock the drains.
Fruits with great laxative properties include kiwi, mango and dragonfruit.

These simple, diet and lifestyle basics should always be the first place to start.

💩 Ground Flaxseeds
🦠 Specific probiotic strains

There are a variety of brands doing a good SB. Just needs to be the right therapeutic dose for effective prevention and treatment.

Extra bonus is that refrigeration is not required for these little gems.
Easy to travel with.
Welcome travel buddies if they mean you don’t miss a day of your precious holiday, from bonding with the porcelain.

Extra tip - continue the treatment for a good week on your return to prevent the development of a bug you may pick up on the way home. 🐛 ✈️

Need to talk Stools? 💩
Love to. It’s my jam!

Whether it’s inconsistent, loose, difficult to pass, incomplete or causing some level of discomfort, let’s figure out why.

For me, figuring out the “why” - the underlying cause of your symptoms, is imperative to finding a long term resolution for your symptoms.

Restrictive diets may temporarily relieve symptoms, but apart from being no fun for anyone will not fix the underlying cause.

Whether it’s digestive dysfunction, stress, microbiome imbalance, food intolerance or SIBO driving your symptom’s, I can help guide the best testing and approaches to take to help find your “why”.

At risk of feeling old, it’s what I’ve been doing in clinical practice now for over 21 years. Good thing I still love it!
